Post subject:  New AC Unit

I've known that this time would come as my unit is roughly 25yrs old. Which brands are best? I believe my house is roughly 1200 sq ft. I could be wrong but I think I'm looking at a 2 ton unit here, not sure about the Seers though. I upgraded my furnace last February and currently have the Carrier Performance Series.

Darkside I'm looking at you!

What should I be looking at roughly cost wise here? I have a friend who does side jobs so I'm waiting on his thoughts also, but wanted to get your expertise here.

1200 sq feet you're probably looking at more like 2 and a half tons, depending on your insulation and windows and what not.
There's something out there called a Manual J that you can use to determine your exact needs.
I've been having issues with the evaporators on Carriers lately, like the last 3 or 4 years, bad TXV's, leaky coils. They were pretty solid before that and now they're supposed to be better but only time will tell.
Stay away from Goodman and bullshit Nordyne brands. You probably won't go wrong with the big three (carrier, trane and Lennox) and to some degree their off brands (Payne, Bryant, American Standard, Armstrong)
Just get a 13 SEER. They'll try to sell you higher efficiency but my opinion is that the ROI on a higher efficiency over the mid range is longer than the lifespan of the unit. Maybe.

Yea I was just reading about Manual J, obviously you wouldn't be able to tell me without looking at my place but I figured you'd have some thoughts. I appreciate it.

I think I'm a little too far for him. Like I said I have a buddy who does the installs and can get me the units for cost or if not a little above them.

Yeah I'm sure everyone wants a guy whose unlicensed and inexperienced and who cannot legally handle the materials necessary to do the job working on a couple thousand dollars investment. I'm sure he'll also property and legally recover the refrigerant in the old unit and dispose of the old unit safely and legally.

Look if you can find someone to do it 300 go for it

I call guys like you "uncle bob" uncle Bob does a lot of installations. And I have to come back a few months later and fix all uncle bobs errors. Suddenly that 300 install looks weird next to a 1000 repair bill.

I guess this is why you didn't get your EPA license.

Would you like me to fix your fuck up or shall we just leave it at the fact you don't know what you're talking about?

I don't even own a vacuum pump..i was never a B card or or C card + service guy) the reclaiming of freon is ABSOLUTELY a global warming precaution.. I'm not sure how you could deny it.

OK. It's about ozone depletion. While refrigerants do have some global warming potential, as does thousands of other chemicals from water to methane and all points in between, the purpose of the regulations is protection of the ozone layer. 1 atom of chlorine can destroy 100,000 atoms of ozone. Therefore, the chlorine containing refrigerants have been phased out and their recovery is of utmost importance.
The new refrigerant is suspected to have some global warming potential, and is thusly included in the recovery and reclamation rules.
Dude I'm one of a handful of people who literally aced the epa exam. 100%. You're out of your element.

Furthermore I'm glad you don't own a vacuum pump. You have no business having one. Stay out of things you don't understand.

I wouldn't claim to be in your league in service ... I'm a fitter- welder.. I've installed miles of pipe for ammonia coolent systems .. I'm not a service guy, I don't own a reclaimer or a vacuum pump..but I do know the EPA requires the refrigeration gas to be reclaimed because its a ozone depletor and causes global warming..

There is almost nothing in the Montreal protocol about global warming. The law is nearly exclusively about ozone. Really the only mention of global warming is about including hfc's because of the suspected global warming potential.
But it's not about global warming. Not by a long shot.
Please don't work on anyone's equipment. You'll hurt yourself, your customer, and the planet.

You are positively wrong. I mean really wrong. Not like "well... I kinda see what you mean I guess" wrong but "what the fuck are you talking about" wrong.

Tell ya what though. I would love to see you do this install actually. I think it would be extremely profitable for me

I'm not interested, I've brazed in line sets and had a buddy pull the vacuum.. I have a couple B tanks and turbo torches and many lbs of Silvfloss ... I'm not sure how you can disagree that reclaiming freon isn't directly to limit CFC's and hcfc's that directly contribute to global warming...
