So haven't been to a concert in 8 years and haven't been to a general admission concert at the Riv in probably 15 or so. In the 90s I probably went to a dozen of them, but its been so long I forgot some stuff. I'm hoping to get there early and wait outside so I can get in at the beginning and get upstairs and grab 2 of the best seats in the balcony. Balcony has the only seats and there's no way I'm doing this without having somewhere to sit.

Years ago I used to wait in line outside concerts all the time. I remember about 90% of the people waiting out front are looking to get the best SRO spots near the stage. The other 10%, like me, are looking to grab the best seats upstairs. My problem is I don't remember how early I had to get in line to be at or near the front. I used to do it all the time but can't for the life of me remember what time I would get out there.

Anyone have a clue? It's Sturgill Simpson, he's starting to blow up and the show is sold out. It's 8:30, but there's no opening act, its billed as an Evening with Sturgill Simpson. I looked at some of the set lists and he plays two acts. In the first he does songs off his first 2 albums. then he comes out later and does the entire 3rd album, a concept album, in order from start to finish. Gonna be amazing!

Doors open at 7:30, I figure I should be there by 4? Thinking of getting a shitty chair from Walgreens and bringing it there for my wait and then just abandoning it when its time to go in.

Also, how hard are they checking people for weed these days at concerts? I'm bringing a vapor pen that has only been used one time and then cleaned. Also bringing wax inside my wife's makeup container. I'm assuming they don't really give a shit about that stuff these days enough to do a thorough search?

My advice is not walk around carrying your wife's makeup container.

Whatever you do, don't get there some crazy early time like 5pm.

Sturgill Simpson--name-wise should be on a 1970's baseball card, sporting stache and extra wrist bands while laying down an infinite bunt--is to good music what Blue Moon or Shock Top are to good beer: weak attempts by industries that long ago chose the race to the bottom/LCD tastes to creating anything worth drinking/listening-to to imitate those brewers/musicians who stepped in and filled the gap left by Big Beer/Music Row. Clumsy commodified dissent.
