Been to a couple interviews and this company has pretty much said the job is mine. They told me at the end of last week that someone from HR would be contacting me with the formal offer. I havent heard anything yet. I'm not worried per se, but if I dont hear something by tomorrow I'm going to feel a bit nervous going into the weekend. What should be a typical turnaround time for this? I havent switched jobs since I graduated college so its been a while since I've been in the hunt...

a phone call tomorrow seems like a reasonable follow up, especially since you were told youd be getting one

Certainly more than a full week.

Vacations and other things sometimes make it hard to get all things lined up.

Be worried about Wednesday of next week. A call would be ok to check on the status though. Show you are interested.

OK, that seems reasonable. I want to balance not seeming overeager with not seeming like I dont give a shit.

My wife just had a similar situation with a new job and it took longer than she would have liked too.

Thing to remember is the hiring manager is the one who is likely short handed and wants you brought on. In my experience, HR just doesn't give a shit and gets to it when it pleases. I think there is nothing wrong with touching base on a Friday heading into the weekend. When my group has had issues with HR we would use the candidate followups as a reason to harass the slow moving HR person.

I have been preemptively job hunting for a few months. In April, got an email from a company's HR person to set up a screening interview, which happened thr following week. A week later I spoke to the new local manager and his manager for a 30-minute phone interview. A couple of days later, they set up an in-person interview for the next week. The in-person interview was with the local manager and two of his lead guys, which lasted about 90 minutes. I was told at the end that the next step would be a video conference with the regional manager about a week later.

That in-person interview happened 5 weeks ago today, and I never did hear back from the regional manager about the video conference... :?

Hey, if it was round one, I could understand the lack of any contact if I wasn't considered a candidate, but after round 3? WTF? Give me some kind of response FFS :x

I agree with all of the above so that karma will smile upon me as the jobs I applied too are finally starting to contact me.

Look, we thought you were okay and all, but showing up to the interview drunk didn't give us a lot of confidence. And the profanity-laced speeches about mayonnaise has HR weary about calling and breaking the news.

You show up.

And leave Jack alone. Jack has enough problems. You take the smaller office.

I feel your pain. This has been off and on, an 18 month search for me. The way companies leave people hanging is terrible. Hang in there.

Mojo sent your way.

Another similar company I applied to after the one above:

* HR recruiter contacted me in February; screened me a bit, then said he was forwarding my info to the service manager doing the hire; did not hear from anyone until the same HR guy contacted me in April saying the exact same thing, BUT the movement on the job opening was delayed due to the company's "bean counters", then
* Service manager the next week set up a phone interview, which lasted 30 minutes. From there, the following week, I had another three-on-1 interview for about an hour in their local office. The manager, on the way out, asked if there was an urgency due any other offers pending ("no").
* 10 days later (last week), he called to say that the opening was put on hold again by the company - for 6 months or so .

My take is that I was his guy and I would have received an offer; otherwise he just would have said we decided to go with a different candidate.

My worst one took forever before it all blew up in my face. Started with a brief phone interview. 2 weeks later a 45-60 minute phone interview. 4 weeks later a face to face meeting. Another 4 weeks later and I did a trip out to Ohio to meet with their president and was told that they were excited to get me on board. 6 weeks went by with no contact until they finally told me they had to scrap the position because a couple of people retired and they needed to move people around. Just a brutal timeframe and hanging out in limbo was the worst feeling.

IF they do a background check and call references, it could take some time. A week or so more.

Take these few weeks to sober up so you can pass your drug test.
