Post subject: | A memo from the Management |
Board Members: We were not surprised today to hear of a new site being started by the former proprietor of this location. Being hard scrabble, street raised, born in Chicago types, we welcome the competition. Furthermore, we don't have an endless supply of money from our mom's and dad's to pay for our whims and personal fancies. But, we still respect those that survived the brutal upbringing which they experienced on the North Shore that do. Furthermore, we are familiar with terms like goodwill and non-compete, which are clauses often referenced and used in the sale of businesses. The absence of a non-compete clause in our agreement, and the "goodwill" of the former owner speak for the themselves. As we move forward, we wish all of our competitors nothing but the best. We look forward to future board gatherings, but my dad will not be paying for the drinks. Sincerely, Management |

I used to drive down Cicero or Laramie every night on the way to Sportsman's Park. There was a little place at Cicero near Madison that sold pig ear sandwiches. The sign had a crazy looking old black dude, his eyes bugging out, in a chef's coat and toque chasing a pig with a cleaver. One day my buddy and I just had to stop for a pig ear sandwich. It was okay, pretty chewy, and kind of tough. Decent sauce though. The guys inside asked us if we were wrestlers. ![]() I don't get down there often anymore but I met a friend out at Hawthorne a couple weeks ago. My wife admonished me not to drive down Cicero. "Take Harlem! There are shootings on Cicero!" Fuck that. Do you really think I was going all the way out to Harlem Avenue to avoid shootings? On my way home I saw the scene of an actual shooting not far from the Eisenhower. They had the yellow tape out and there was a body on the ground. It was in the paper the next day. |

I grew up near Laramie and North, and still like to drive through the neighborhood from time to time when I'm in the area. Still see some of the same joints I ate at 40 years ago (G&N, Victor's Pizza, Margie's Beef), though I'm not brave enough to go in. |
