There would be explosions on a monthly basis, they couldn't handle deregulation..the natural disasters would cripple them..floods, drought and the massive area would need to be secured... They'd have to start their own military and handle all the ports...sure they have plenty of natural gas-oil reserves but the Rich would get very rich and the majority would struggle with no federal assistance...crime would go through the roof.

Energy, infrastructure, higher education, access to shipping lanes, bordered with what would be its 2 biggest trading partners, population....they also wouldn't lose all of the defense spending. Too much purpose built defense manufacturing infrastructure and skilled labor pools. My guess is that they would be a decent exporter in that regard.

Alaska could go it alone and be fine, Maybe Cali but nobody else could...All those manufacturing jobs would move to surrounding states. Whites are the minority in Texas, Mexico could take them over.

Energy, infrastructure for sure, but their education system is garbage and they'd be way too reliant on the US for defense. Mexico would own them in a very short amount of time. I don't think they'd be as strong as they think they would be.

Houston took it on the chin from the collapse in oil prices.

Austin, being both a university town and the state capital, is relatively impervious to your standard business cycle fluctuations.

Dallas, which doesn't have Houston's umbilical nexus to the oil industry, is going gang-busters. A lot of tech companies starting up or locating satellite offices in Dallas.

But anything west of Fort Worth = oil country; and while 2015 resulted in mass layoffs, downsizing, bankruptcies, the worst of it appears to be over, as oil stabilizes above $45 a barrel.

Just last week in Dallas, about 30 idiots at a Tony Robbins/Self Motivation event were burned after doing a firewalk across hot coals. Five were burned badly enough to require hospitalization. How stupid do the rest have to be watch the first moron get burned and still do it?

I'm not saying they all were from Texas, but Dallas certainly brings out the stupid in people. Get away from the residents of San Antonio, Austin & Houston and I don't think there's enough common sense left to run as a sovereign nation. Hell, with them, they can't even run the welfare state that it is now.
