Of course this is a thing.

Part of me wants to say "don't let the door hit your ass..." ...but then again, I'd prefer to not see the dollar tank like the pound.

yes, please, and take Florida and Arizona with you.

Oh, no more Social Security or other Federal government payments to any Texas/Florida/Arizona residents once they leave. Image

This is just the brits trying to make themselves feel better about committing fiscal suicide.

I'd love to see these shitkickers try it alone and come crawling back in under a decade.. They'd never make it, and most Texans are too dense to realize it.

There would be explosions on a monthly basis, they couldn't handle deregulation..the natural disasters would cripple them..floods, drought and the massive area would need to be secured... They'd have to start their own military and handle all the ports...sure they have plenty of natural gas-oil reserves but the Rich would get very rich and the majority would struggle with no federal assistance...crime would go through the roof.

Been to Texas? On average, Texans are not the most luminous bulbs. ISIS could conquer Texas in a week just by taking Tony Romo hostage and blaming it on the commies who live in South Austin.

Exactly, for starters, they'd lose all of these US DOD jobs and this DOD spending, let them fend off the Mexican cartel and ISIS and plucky Belizian pirates with their jacked up F1500's and 20 gauge side-by-side shotguns.

Johnson Space Center/NASA? Gone as well.

Texas would be able to survive. Not saying it would be a utopia, but they are the best positioned to make do.

Energy, infrastructure, higher education, access to shipping lanes, bordered with what would be its 2 biggest trading partners, population....they also wouldn't lose all of the defense spending. Too much purpose built defense manufacturing infrastructure and skilled labor pools. My guess is that they would be a decent exporter in that regard.

Alaska could go it alone and be fine, Maybe Cali but nobody else could...All those manufacturing jobs would move to surrounding states. Whites are the minority in Texas, Mexico could take them over.

I'd guess we'd relocate the DoD personnel and infrastructure back inside our borders?

Massachusetts--first rate educational system, from K-12 through post-grad; economy largely based on knowledge and specialty manufacturing/semi-conductors/medical equipment/bio-tech--could be Switzerland-fine outside the US, jurisdictionally speaking.

I would be somewhat entertained if we gave the babies their bottle then built the wall around Texas ... call it Texico.

Hola ... yo soy señor Roberto Hope para Texico ... gracias para los recuerdos ...

Energy, infrastructure for sure, but their education system is garbage and they'd be way too reliant on the US for defense. Mexico would own them in a very short amount of time. I don't think they'd be as strong as they think they would be.

You're clueless as to the economic climate in Texas right now.

They're hurting.

I know plenty about their economic climate right now, it's dire. As everything it ebbs and flows and has little to do with the current discussion of generalities.

As is always the case, you are the clueless one here, kid.

Yeah...except my entire job functions around things like this. So I think it is something I tend to know about.

Texas couldn't survive on their own, in the present.

Again, never said it would be a utopia, I said they could make a go at it. And Mexico isn't going to "own" anything. They barely "own" the northern 1/3 of their own nation. They aren't invading anything, Texas or otherwise, anytime soon.

There won't be a break from the U.S., not even a vote, but hypothetically the short term issues would, largely, depend on the terms of separation. This is just game theory at this point.

Yea, except that you do a great job at constantly proving that you do not know shit and have the mental makeup of a 12 year old.

Stick to rear wings and plastic body cladding, son.

Sounds like you're the one who's mistaken.

If you're looking for aero...you got the wrong guy.

But don't let accuracy stop you. You haven't to this point.

GIven the ambient level of corruption of US politicians in general and Texas politicians in particular, Mexican drug cartels would take over Texas within the first year of its independence.

Houston took it on the chin from the collapse in oil prices.

Austin, being both a university town and the state capital, is relatively impervious to your standard business cycle fluctuations.

Dallas, which doesn't have Houston's umbilical nexus to the oil industry, is going gang-busters. A lot of tech companies starting up or locating satellite offices in Dallas.

But anything west of Fort Worth = oil country; and while 2015 resulted in mass layoffs, downsizing, bankruptcies, the worst of it appears to be over, as oil stabilizes above $45 a barrel.

This guy gets it.

I believe they are fairly tax-friendly, but that changes if they have to defend themselves. There is no way they could fend off the drug cartels.

Just last week in Dallas, about 30 idiots at a Tony Robbins/Self Motivation event were burned after doing a firewalk across hot coals. Five were burned badly enough to require hospitalization. How stupid do the rest have to be watch the first moron get burned and still do it?

I'm not saying they all were from Texas, but Dallas certainly brings out the stupid in people. Get away from the residents of San Antonio, Austin & Houston and I don't think there's enough common sense left to run as a sovereign nation. Hell, with them, they can't even run the welfare state that it is now.
