Eh ... see, I think that show was the genesis for the over-the-top 'look how crazily emotive these contestants are' problem that infects pretty much all game shows now (excepting of course for Jeopardy, thankfully), so I don't personally hold it in any regard.

But it was about as entertaining as it gets.

People yelling letters like it's some "Eureka" moment hoping to figure out some idiot before/after puzzle like "Dana White Christmas" or whatever is as compelling as watching a bum take a nap. At least on the old version you got to look at people "buy" merchandise and briefly try to do the math and guess how much money there was leftover that was going to go on a gift certificate.

$25,000/$100,000 Pyramid and Jeopardy! tower above the rest. From there it's about what you're in the mood for, I guess. Press Your Luck and Match Game were fun but stupid. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was intelligent but joyless. The Price Is Right is a cultural institution, at least as far as daytime network television goes, but the game itself is poorly structured and largely random bullshit unless you do the legwork to cheat. Wheel of Fortune has no redeeming qualities.

Scrabble and Concentration were well-designed games that should have stuck around longer than they did, though Concentration was around from like the beginning of television up to 1993, so maybe they just ran out of rebuses.

I really like Jeopardy too but it has been exposed that basically the contestants just do straight memorization of common subjects that come up there and then fumble their way through things like "Coached Tom Brady to four Super Bowls".

At least they still try to put on the pretense that their show has some degree of dignity, minus the occasional odd contestant story like the woman who prayed for snow on her wedding day but ended up getting 8" on her honeymoon.
