We were just advised of an indefinite "ground stop" at O'Hare that is delaying our flight.

It's getting bad by me. Big lightning. I haven't heard of any tornados or anything, though.

Not yet, but it will be in about an hour. Looks like maybe 2-3 hours of rain too. You might be in for a long nite. Unbutton that sportcoat and make your way to the bar.

Back when I was a macher flying around on my private King Air, I was headed to Lexington with my pilot, Jim Kaim. The weather was bad leaving Palwaukee and there was a lot of lightning all around us. I asked Jim what would happen if it hit us. He looked at me really seriously and said, "It better not!"

FBI picked up some chatter. Cavity searches for all incoming passengers that match the description of white and bald.

Whoa... did anyone else hear something about a chemical weapon that was released with local hospitals dispatching hundreds of paramedics to O'Hare?

flying has become impossible. i don't know if they have lame pilots these days or what; but last 3x's i've flown i've had flights canceled due to "WX". Not even SVRWX, just plain old "weather".

Anything 10 hours or so and under? Drive it.

if you are flying these days, some tips:

check your email as soon as you get up the day you're flying. Airlines now cancel your flight via email and tell you to rebook "the next day". You can still fly that day; they are just trying to manage capacity by getting people to voluntarily alter their travel plans.

As soon as you know your flight is canceled, whether at the airport, at home, wherever--immediately contact the airline and re-book a guaranteed seat on the next flight your airline can get you a guaranteed seat--even if is the next day and you plan to try getting out sooner via flying standby.

Once you've locked in a seat on another flight, you can still try to fly standby on an earlier flight--esp if you're not at your original/home departure location. They give you priority if you're away from home and trying to get home vs people from that city. But don't wait to lock in a flight, even if it seems like it's inconveniently the next day. cuz you could end up stuck for 2 or 3 days if you don't.

if your flight gets canceled and your stuck at an airport, the best people to talk to are the ticket agents outside
security at the airport. the staff running the desks at the gate for each flight don't give a fuck about anything except the flight or flights assigned to that gate at that time.

if one agent tells you they can't help. get back in line and try another agent. keep trying. the good agents will creatively get you where you need to be asap.

if you're flying into or out of LaGuardia, expect delays/cancelations and general timetable fuckery.

Direct flights. Pay extra if you have to. Worth it not to deal with multiple airports. Greatly lowers your chances of delay/cancelation. Take a different airline if your usual airline doesn't have direct flights to your destination. Southwest is good, but they only fly direct to so many places.

Drive instead.

that was my personal experience flying recently. spent over 24 hours in airports on the way to and from NY--with a non-scheduled, non-planned sidetrip to the Indianapolis airport on the way back thrown in. Which Indy, btw, is a fucking nice airport. 24 hour starbucks and huge flat screens running ESPN.

I did get hassled by cops in Indy tho. When I left my carryon luggage by the bench I was half-napping/chilling on to use the men's room for a quick piss at 5 am. Was gone 2, 3 minutes tops. Came back, and 2 cops were standing there, staring at my stuff, squawking into their walkie-talkies. Took my license and ran it and then told me not to leave bags unattended. not even for two minutes in a mostly empty airport at 5 AM.

If you are driving these days, some tips:

Make sure to get plenty of sleep before you leave. Tired driving can be as dangerous as drunkenous driving.

Try to split driving time with another passenger. You can keep an eye on each other, as well as catch a quick nap while you're off duty. If you do drive alone, put on the radio to help keep you alert.

At night, refrain from using cruise control. Having to concentrate on maintaining your speed will keep your mind stimulated, and help you keep awake.

If you can, consult a weather report before heading out, and try to design a route that will minimize the chance of inclement weather.

Be sure to check your tire pressure, fluid levels, and gas level before heading out on your trip.

Keep napkins, plastic ware, and a small cooler handy for meals "on the go." Also keep jumper cables, spare change for tolls, a first aid kit, a flashlight, a pillow, a blanket, a fire extinguisher, some kitty litter, a spare tire or donut, windshield wiper fluid, emergency flares, flourescent distress flag, and a hand crank radio in your car. If traveling in the winter, a shovel, windshield scraper, small broom, shelf stable snack foods, tow chain, extra medications, matches, small candles, and a electric lantern are essential.

Don't drive, just telecommute.

An extremely stupid move by an experienced traveler, you are lucky they only warned you
