This morning while perusing the CSFMB,I had one of these giant M'F'ers flying in the house.
I had never seen one before and was wondering what it was. I finally cornered it against a window and killed it. It turns out, they are relatively harmless. When I first saw it,it might have been flying with a dead fly in it's grasp making it even creepier looking.

From Wiki:
Giant Black Wasp
Description[edit]
Sphex pensylvanicus is a large, black wasp, significantly larger than its congener Sphex ichneumoneus (the great golden digger wasp).[5] Males are smaller than females, at only 19–28 mm (0.7–1.1 in) long, to females 25–34 mm (1.0–1.3 in).[2] According to John Bartram, "The Sting of this Wasp is painful, but does not swell like others".[6] As well as being larger than S. ichneumoneus, it is also darker, with smoky wings and an entirely black body, where S. ichneumoneus has yellow wings, red legs, and a partly red abdomen.[7]

No but we have had to deal with these big bees here this summer. They are called carpenter bees and do not have hives they bore into wood, like 4x4's.

That's funny, this wasp was called a loner wasp because they don't hive up either. I have never seen one before but in our garden we have a lot of roses that draws these type of insects.

Had this exact insect buzzing around us on Sunday playing mini golf. My wife took off her sandal and
killed it dead. I was very impressed. Getting stung probably would have really hurt, it looked pretty
intimidating.

Have had quite a few similar looking wasps buzzing around the back yard...mud wasps are what we have, I'm pretty sure.

Bernstein confirmed this on yesterday's show as well. Jimmy's wife e-mailed the B&B show to confirm she left Jimmy over his obsession with flying insects.
