We used the subway. Very nice system as we got nearly anywhere we wanted. It's nice the lines have many stops but slightly annoying since they travel slowly compared to other cities' subways I've experienced.

I was only there for 1.5 days so didn't have much time to explore such an expansive city. Definitely noticed it in Brooklyn. Some businesses had 4 piles with 15-20 bags stacked on the sidewalk. Lower Manhattan where I stayed wasn't as bad. Stacks of 2-3 bags. But I think that's because they probably just threw the other 15 bags down all the holes that were EVERYWHERE from construction.

There is always a way to avoid toll bridges in NYC. It isn't as convenient but there is always a way. Google Maps doesn't care about toll bridges. When we would go in on weekends we would basically look at the map, navigate to the free bridge, and then put in our final destination. During the week you are better trusting google maps and spending the money if you need to.

It is amazing they have not come up with any sort of solution for the garbage problem either. It's not like garbage didn't exist 100 years ago. I don't know why they don't have a dumpster on every block that gets emptied every 2 or 3 days. They've got the money.

It's been years since I've been to NYC so I can only guess they did similar to what the CTA did; eliminated A, B or "all stop" designations. Quality of life took a big step backward when that happened.

The problem is most of the city wasn't built with alleys. In Chicago that trash is there, it's just hidden in the alleys you barely notice.
