Would you loan money to non immediate family? I made a 6000 loan to a close family member 4 years ago with the stipulation it be paid back within 3 years. We're close now... still 1000 out there but apparently promises have been made to finish repaying of error the next year. Now, a cousin has asked for about 1500. They got another 1000 from another source. It has something to do with back rent as I understand it. So... I'm very concerned about the ability to repay. It's not just that... it's also that family loans to me are a bad idea. I don't want something as stupid as cash to ruin Christmas or thanksgiving or whatever when I'd see this person. But more than anything else... it's the ability to repay that concerns me. Is it wrong to say no? How does one handle a sticky situation like this? Would I be rude to say now isn't a good time for me to do this based on my own issues? |

Don't do it. I've loaned money to family and it either took years to be repaid or in some cases they stopped talking to me and acted like I did something to them. |

I wouldn't do it. When I bought my house, my dad fronted me $3,000 for furniture, since I couldn't finance it with the pending mortgage/credit stuff. Only reason I felt comfortable doing this was I knew I had the $8k first time home buyer's refund coming within a few months, so I was able to pay him back as soon as I amended my TR. Just tell the relative you had some unexpected expenses recently and can't afford the loan. |

Sometimes that's a good thing. I loaned twenty bucks to a guy at the racetrack one time. He never even offered to pay me back even though I saw him almost everyday. He would go to other parts of the track instead of sitting with us. I was steaming about it for awhile until my friend Jerry who died said, "I thought you hated that guy?" I replied that I did. And he said, "Then you should be happy he isn't hanging around anymore. That's the best twenty bucks you ever spent." I think there may be a similar scene in A Bronx Tale but this was well before that movie came out. |

Never loan money to family you expect to get back. Don't tell them you don't expect it back but don't get mad if it doesn't get repaid but obviously they never get anything again. |

if it's only $1K, hit up some other family members to all pitch-in and pay the back rent directly to the landlord, with no attribution. yeah, family/friend loans aren't a good idea. Unless it's a business venture or appreciating asset. |

It's not Josh rock. I really didn't want to get involved and this is this kind of thing that would lead to others thinking they have a line of credit at the National Bank of Darkside. |

This Consider it a gift and be pleasantly surprised if you get if back should you loan it. If you want to be savvy about it, have them sign a note and get some tax relief on it when they default. You will not be getting money back from a person who has to borrow to make rent. |

All 3 of my brothers ask me for loans. Usually anywhere from $500-$1,000. I know which one will pay me back without issue, but the other two are like pulling teeth to make payments back. It's a burden, but I try not to hold on to the resentment that long. I always think, "If something bad happens to me financially, I want to know they would help out as well." What's crazy is I have a boss who has a serious gambling addiction, and spends the rest of his money on this chick he met up here. He has been asking for anything from $250-$1,000 the last 8 months. He pays me back, but he also let's me pick my shifts/hooks up hours in return. |
