I can't handle this. I'm still trying to get over the loss of Marshall Field's (Screw you Macy's - go back to NY). Now Searsss? Holiday depression will hit early this season.

The problem with Sears is that they are a jack of all trades and master of none. There is a more specific place to buy everything they sell. I sold electronics there in college. Even though it was pretty good money around the holidays, people clearly didn't think of Sears when they needed a new TV... Or a new anything.

My wife worked at the local Sears part-time until they closed back in January of 2015. Her discount was good especially for when we bought big ticket things for the new house (refrigerator, washer, dryer, etc.). That is what they should be retooled as, an appliance and tool store.

I recall at one point sears was so arrogant the only credit card they would accept was Sears and Discover Card (which they rolled out). Visa and Mastercard were not welcome. That was when I was done with them.

Last I knew, Sears main e-commerce development teams were above the now-shuttered downtown Sears flagship store at State/Madison. Store's closed; but would think they still maintain the Sears/K-Mart et al sites out of that location. I think devs have the option to work at either downtown State Street or burbs; but the humongous Hoffman Estates campus is about the worst nightmare Office Space suburban environment one can imagine. Suicide would be preferable to having to work/live out there, I should think. They were expanding the downtown office space to a neighboring building as well.

Sears founded some interesting businesses: Allstate, Dean Witter, Discover, and National Tire and Battery (NTB). They also have famous brands, Kenmore, Die Hard, and Craftsman. They devote too much floor space to products no one associates with Sears- clothing, shoes, jewelry electronics, etc. They should have shifted to something more akin to Home Depot with their clothing and shoe offerings limited to rugged stuff. It's too late now.

Sears won't be folding any time soon. Yes, the stores are abysmal. They made their money off charging higher prices to middle-class people who like to use their credit card frequently. Now they have changed their line to reflect their clientele, namely lower class Hispanics. That isn't meant to be prejudice btw, but the last two times I went into Sears, that was the makeup of 75%+ of the shoppers. My bet is that they will re-invent themselves as a web-only storefront. The thing is, Sears has been very innovative from a technology point of view. While it was a big mistake to have their corporate office in Hoffman Estates where most of the Chicago talent pool doesn't want to commute to from the city, they are on the leading edge with technology, especially their e-commerce sites. I've heard their practices are fairly crazy, like making people work 24 hour shifts to get releases out, but they are doing stuff that should make them more profitable than they are.

A friend of mine spent several years running their national appliance delivery/setup logistics, including the "white glove" turnkey services. Their back end processes are solid. They should have adopted a in-store model a little closer to Costco, fewer products, better prices, better customer service when something goes sideways. My dad (early 80s, retired, frugal but not cheap, computer-illiterate) should be buying a lot of stuff from Sears. Nope, Costco is where he thinks of first. He buys most of his non-church clothes from Costco, even though they only have maybe 10 kinds of shirts out there at any point in time. As far as Hispanics in a Sears, you can't take 4 steps in the Sam's Club in Northlake on a Sunday without running into three Hispanic families.
