At a game tonight, 4th and 5 and the QB throws an incomplete pass. Flag on the field is for false start on the offense. Defense declines the penalty, turnover on downs.

Is this really allowed in HS? You run plays where there are false starts? And if so, you can turn down a false start? Seems weird.

was it a false start or illegal formation? i believe both are the same motion by the ref but with illegal formation the play continues whereas false start should stop the play immediately

That could be -- the press box announced it as false start, but could have mixed it up... I never saw the false start myself. Didn't know if it was some bizarre HS rule or not.

It is the same signal for both false start and illegal formation. You have until the snap to get 7 on the line which is why the play was allowed to go off. Illegal shifts and motion are the same as well (different signals) in regards to being a foul at the snap. The defense is allowed to accept the yardage or in your situation decline and take the result of the play.
