Dead or alive? When I still lived in Chicago Daley (as I seem to remember) tried to kill off the neighborhood tavern. By not allowing liquor licenses to be sold/transferred or whatever the old school mom and pop joints would die off I assume was the thought. I know there are some on main streets still but I am talking about the in the neighborhood on the corner ones.

Where I grew up on SW side there could be a tavern on three out of four corners of a side street intersection. Area any left at all? You guys miss them or is it all chain places and fancy pants establishments to grab a beer, shoot pool, watch a game and so on.

Well we are 50/50. I remember some years back we went to one and the owner just bought a few cases of beer and opened every weekend and sold them for one cent. Something about just keeping it active.

Well kirkwood is right in that they're not as prevalent as they once were.

But the ones who are still around are doing good.

They are perfectly fine and plentiful if you look for them.

They are present but there are fewer of them.

Typical of Daley, it was never these corner joints that caused the problems. They could be policed by the community in which they existed. It is the one's he allowed to flourish in the trendy stretches of the city that caused the bulk of the problems.

Was there a lot of NIMBY-ism in decades prior? Seems like today yuppies bitch up a storm over anything let alone a tavern disrupting their idealistic $600K+ enclaves.

Listen guys, these are bars where the bartender just pours beer all day. This isn't the clientele that's going to get us out of debt. If we don't establish a cocktail program to pull in that young 20-30 female demographic, we're done!

Bottled beer runs a 13% profit margin. Draft beer is around 20%. But spirits run a 30% profit margin. If I can convert you to a cocktail drinker, we win!

Always. The change is that there used to be strong elected officials who understood that they were to make decisions rather than defer their power to a straight democracy. The tavern issue was just a Daley peculiarity, like wrought iron fences. Most of those taverns weren't causing anyone any problems. Daley didn't like them and he put some diligent teetotaler in the position to police the licenses.

When you think about it, there could not have been a much more neighborhood guy than Daley but it was almost like he had some self hatred over it
