Post subject:  Is there an East Side of Chicago

When my mom was younger she lived on what she called the East Side (right by the Indiana border). I have since said this to others when they asked where my parents were from and people have looked at me like I was crazy. They say the east side of Chicago would be underwater.

For the long time Chicago people, is there an east side or would that just be considered an extension of the south side? What say you?

Not a long time Chicago guy but I'd say Hegewisch and the East Side proper compose what you could call the city's east side. I wouldn't call it the south side any more than the west side is the south side. The relative isolation of the area along the Indiana border makes a persuasive argument for an east side unto itself.

I've seen some maps call the highrises east of Columbus the "Near East Side" or something, and that's horseshit.

technically no,there is no east side because the way we measure distance in the city. State st is the base line for E/W and Madison is for N/S. so if you look at it that way that area is the Southeast side. The direct east side is the lake.

I've always thought of the East side as Heigwisch (sp) or anything with the "Lettered Avenue" streets. When I was kid used to say that they ran out of street names and just said eff it, this will be "Avenue A, B, C, D etc"..

Actually, it's the other way around: the Avenue _ streets were meant to be the north-south streets that began with A, continuing east to west through the alphabet, which obviously no one followed through on except for the Ks and I think the Ls and Ms.

Of course there is. There's what people used to call the Southeast Side as a whole and then the individual neighborhoods inside the Southeast Side, including the East Side (I know, that's not helpful), South Deering (including Slag Valley), Hegwisch. In the 50s, the "East Side" also seemed to include South Shore.

I went to school with and taught East Siders. They were cut off from the rest of the South Side by industry, and they also border Indiana, which is why the white East Siders were a little different (not in a bad way) from the other white South Siders. Not sure how it is with the Latinos who dominate there now--that is, I'm not sure how different they are than Latinos in other South Side neighborhoods.

The East Side is also home to large numbers of Plexicans, one of the more interesting ethnic combinations there is.

Yup that is the south side, ergo it is south of Madison. Where you are talking about is the Southeast side. They are at different points on the compass. Trying to say SE is the same as S is like saying purple and puce are they same color.

But by those parameters, the West Side should be (mostly) considered the North Side....

True but its just the way the city calls it. Per city propaganda the real east side is the hotels and stuff from Navy Pier South to museum Campus

That's what I was thinking, yeah, that the Calumet River and all the industrial zones along it cut Hegewisch/East Side/Harbor Point off from everyone else. It's just not a very accessible place (the only rail service is the South Shore Line). You get the feeling the community was (is?) very insular. I was under the impression that there were still some assorted Southern Slavs (your Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks) lingering around the area in addition to the Mexicans.

The area right along Avenue A is pretty weird if you look at it on Street View. It's like Chicago just stops.

Metra Electric Line goes down there too, not that you want to take the Metra Electric Line.

It's actually a pretty alright area as long as you avoid the brazenly shitty parts. Losing Wisconsin Steel and South Works fucked things up but the Calumet is still fairly active. A week ago we were taking a boat down to Chicago Dry Dock down there and we saw the usual barge/tugs coming in plus a couple salties. Sometimes when we're bored at work we'll spot the big boys out in the lake and pull them up on AIS and there are 1000 footers regularly coming into the Calumet, AM and Gary. Not too long ago the Mesabi Miner was around, that's the one that rammed the Hollyhock and caused a huge stir, second longest ship on the lakes.

Chicago is still a fairly busy port, we just don't handle containers. That and the river downtown is almost impassable now, you really only see the Selvick, Mallard and Kiowa bother with it. Everyone else goes down on the east side.

Could I take the Electric to 93rd/South Chicago and walk to Calumet Fisheries without dying? I need more cured fish in my life.

You could but it's a little hike.

The Ewing bridge is closed to SB traffic so everyone has to go down to 95th and cross. So for now that normally terrifying embankment at South Chicago is pretty well trafficked by everyone. Survival is likely.

part Polish, part Mexican. I know they exist all over Chicago, but there seem to be a lot of them on the East Side (or were a lot, until a few years ago). Not meant or ever taken as an insult.

Former cop superintendent Matt Rodriguez wasn't from the East Side (he was Bridgeport or Back of the Yards), but it was interesting to hear him explain how he could speak some Spanish and Polish...
