Pretty amazing stuff by Space X: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016 ... e-science/

Interesting that he thinks we will be wiped out if we don't leave earth. Seems to me that we might go out quicker if travel into the unknown.

Not sure of the details but it's very interesting where our civilization will go in the future.

We have to reach for the stars.

Otherwise we'll never get Satellite 5 or travel to New New York on New Earth.

Would have been there by now if we hadn't chased the LEO dream with the shuttle program and stuck with with the heavy lift stuff. Shuttle killed NASA.

The plan, post-Apollo, was to have men on Mars by the 80's.

What's with the cult of personality surrounding Tyson?

Strange.

A man can invent his own space program and a stylish electric car and still be dumb enough to put Amber Heard in line for half his cash.

That man is the truth.

But seriously

His point is basically there is not return on investment for Elons company. And at the end of the day, a company's goal is to make money. Also, the reason we went to the moon was because of the military, and we do not have that for Mars. In a few of his interviews, he does say IF the Chinese said tomorrow they were going to colonize Mars, we would be there in 9 months.

Just speaking for my interest and not for any profitability or government reasons I wish they kept charging hard with NASA.

That you know of.

I think his point is, if someone else is trying to do something, the US government will do it before them. Look at the moon landing as an example.

We don't have one to launch anything. I'm development, yes, but nothing on the pad. All that knowledge and production capability was slowly lost after Apollo was shut down.

But I agree with you on the last point as well as pittmikes. It's just that the goal of "getting there" is what doomed Apollo.

I'm just stating facts. We've been stuck in LEO for decades, takes time to spin up engineering and product capacity and replace the engineers that have been lost since the Nixon administration. To get to Mars you need to first be able to get out of low Earth orbit with heavy payload. Constellation was the actual plan to do this but it needed too much funding and was grounded, so to speak.

The closest thing we have is the SLS and that's kind of half an actual program and half pork distribution.

Weird that he said that. I remember him stating that the value of space travel is difficult to measure because of the dual-use technology that is discovered in the process of trying to solve the incredible task of space travel.

He's an great talk show guest. Thought his A.I. views were a bit underwhelming.

I'll trust Elon Musk over Tyson in that particular area.

It seems like Musk make these announcements to deflect attention from his other ventures that are hemhorraging money.
