See, I don't think the guy was going about it from the ignorant perspective as expressed by Chas above. He looks pretty young. Maybe he didn't know the weight of that stereotype. Though someone certainly should have told him. I would guess he thought he was appealing to his constituents. Would you be offended if he were running in a largely Mexican district and he hosted a taco dinner for residents? Probably not. The stereotype doesn't have the same connotations. I think you'd be surprised at what some people don't know. I certainly don't think the guy was trying to sabotage his own campaign by offending his voters and I have a hard time calling a giveaway of free food "wrong".

I'm will still tell you you're wrong. There is a YUGE difference between a black comedian making a joke about it and candidate for office all but putting on a minstrel show. Chas, it's not just the stereotype. I don't necessarily think all stereotypes are bad. It's that this particular stereotype conjures images of black people as caricatures from a time I'm sure they would all like to forget. Just once, try to understand the nuance of a situation.
