I think this deserves this own thread. I get you are upset and unhappy but we can please stop this professional victimhood craze? The amount of self pity in the past few days is amazing.

Clearly, these people aren't sports fans or they'd be used to much more heartbreak than this.

Conservatives handle losses better. They skipped the grief stage and advanced to stocking up on guns and demanding Obama's birth certificate be verified. :D

Seriously, I see the latest social media meme is "White men- stop telling minorities and women 'everything will be all right.'"

It seems to me that aggressive and rude response to a friend comforting you because of your overwrought and hysterical reaction to an election result is exactly the kind of thing that- at least to some degree- may have caused the election results to go the way they did in the first place. Maybe it would be best if people stopped trying to put themselves in special categories and giving orders to others as to what they can and can't say.

I'd say it's quite clear the election results were a definite pushback against what you're describing

I think in part, for sure. That "pushback" is not a great thing, pretty fucking childish, in fact, but it is what it is. If everybody else is going to live their lives and vote according to their identity, you shouldn't really be angry if the majority eventually does the same. Beating up white men will no doubt be a more viable political strategy in about 2050 when they are a definite minority.

One of the other stories I read in the Tribune today was about a kindergarten teacher who was clearly distraught over the election of Trump. She was another one who views Hillary Clinton as the avatar or womanhood instead of the corrupt career politician she actually is. Anyway, she held a mock election in her class between fictional characters. I guess there's a book with some girl named Grace who wants to be president. The story talked about a little boy who voted for Grace because he "thought she was the better candidate." It was obviously supposed to be heartwarming, but I found it heartbreaking. The poor kid knew he was supposed to vote for the girl for no other reason that she was a girl. He knew what was going to make his teacher happy. It's really sad. And not at all what I'd call equality. Do you want to earn it on merit or just because you have a vagina?

One of the things I keep reading is some version of "if someone as awesome, competent, and great as Hillary can lose to Trump, how can any women ever win?" And it's just a false premise. There is nothing awesome, great, or even particularly competent about Hillary Clinton. Yes, I and MANY others would have preferred her to Trump, but it's not like a person was insane for not wanting Clinton near the White House. She is seriously flawed.

This pushback shouldn't stop others from pushing. Maybe even push harder. This isn't 1956.

Is the push for equity/equality or to punish white men?

Well, if the push is for a female president, let's get a good female candidate. I voted for a better one than Clinton yesterday, albeit one that couldn't win.

Its not a push its a fucking lynch mob. So many innocent people have been just ruined by an out of control vindictive media that has rattled itself mad in the echo chamber of social media outrage. Remember that Justine Sacco? With the tongue-in-cheek joke about South Africa and AIDS? She got her life turned upside down for doing absolutely nothing wrong. She was completely innocent and there have been a few others like her, but then there are the thousands of people who did something a little stupid and then suffered totally outsized consequences at the hands of a Twitter mob.

This all started with Occupy Wall Street, a populist uprising that at the time seemed noble in a "agree with what they're saying--but not how they're saying it" way. Now its a handful of loosely organized performance-troupe activist groups trying to make good looking Instagram posts that orbit a completely disorganized online death squad finding people almost at random to character assassinate. Online media, which has always billed itself as more in touch than print and broadcast counterparts, got caught thinking people on social media were representative of the whole country...or at least the "right" part of the country (of which PA, MI, WI and even OH were a part). Then the old media, paranoid about its impending doom, decided to emulate instead of counter the horseshit Gawker, Vice, Vox etc. were spewing.

It all got fucking uprooted Tuesday. The part of the country that was sick of this shit woke up and voted.

The media seems to have moved into the "shameless clickbait" stage of grieving.

I finally figured it out and I don't think this is exactly groundbreaking but I hadn't put it together yet.

These are almost exclusively white women who are younger to middle age. I think for at least 2 years, and for some about 10 years they have built up what it would mean to have a woman President. Even Hillary mentioned the "glass ceiling" like life is going to change because we elected a non-man into the office of President. They had already ran through the celebration in their heads a million times. Jezebel even had some sort of thing about how much voting for Hillary meant while the polls were open. That was taken away from them.

Now, how can they react? They can't say "I WANTED A WOMAN PRESIDENT AND I DIDN'T GET IT AND NOW I'M MAD!" so they have to invent ludicrous scenarios and share stories of children being concerned that all non-white males are going to be rounded up and jailed. They can't blame the non-white male voters for what happened. They can't blame Hillary for being a horrible campaigner in virtually everything she ever did. They can't accept that there are actual logical reasons people voted for Trump because those people have a much different life experience than them. They can't figure out why so many women voted for Trump.

They are inventing a reality that almost certainly will look stupid within a few months of the Trump dictatorship.

This is the difference between these people and someone like me who didn't want Trump to win but also didn't react as if the world is ending because he won. In reality, it makes me feel empathy for these people.

The Tribune and Herald have Obama and Trump meeting in the White House yesterday, and the picture they used makes it look like they are at a funeral. You cannot tell me that if Hillary won that the picture would have been the two them frowning and looking forlorn.

To their credit, the Sun Times used a picture of them sitting down and smiling at the camera.

Your first problem, Brick, is that deadspin isn't journalism. Nothing involving those blog brats is "writing". it's typing. it's self indulgent drivel that collects like smegma all over the internet.

i used to think the new york times op eds were insufferable. then deadspin came along.

I want to be careful about how I put this. It's going to be difficult to articulate without sounding like some knuckle-dragging misogynist, which I assure you I am not. And this is really just my experience and I realize it's a small sample.

I've worked for two women from Hillary's generation. And they both had similar traits and approaches that I see in Clinton. And I don't want this to come off as a criticism of these women in any way. I understand the challenges they faced in their careers, coming of age in a time when the available paths were pretty much teacher, secretary, housewife, or hooker. That's a reflection on American society of the time rather than any personal flaw in these women or a commentary on their competence. But the space they staked out in the workplace seemed to be all about them as women rather than about the actual job/work itself. All decisions seemed to be made through this prism of them kicking at a "glass ceiling". It wasn't just men who found this off putting, the Gen-X women found it tiresome as well.

The reality though is for better or worse society has accepted everything from Deadspin to Jon Stewart to Rush Limbaugh as journalism. It isn't but people accept it as so and distort reality.

This reminded me, and I didn't see any mention of it in the media, although I think someone must have said something about it. The purple worn by the Clintons during the concession speech was an unusual and interesting choice.

Kinda wonder what the response would have been if a large group of old white guys had burned an Obama effigy shortly after his election.
