Genuinely curious how political discussions turned out at your thanksgiving dinner table.

Spoke with my brother in law during the Cowboys game and we were talking work politics and he mentioned how he would never want to get into real politics. You can never really be yourself all the time, you have to follow the party line, vote certain ways so everyone stays on your side etc. We briefly talked about all the anti-Trump GOPers that are now softening that viewpoint to try to get appointed here and there and agreed even though Trump says he is beholden to no one, he had to make some sort of deals along the way. Then about an hour later we're eating pie in the dining room and my sister in law announces she is going to run for village trustee next year as an independent.

An unofficial poll of my family has MANY hating Trump but just as MANY voting for him as those that voted for Hillary. The others voted for candidates they couldn't tell you anything about and my brother wrote in a vote for himself.

I showed great restraint by not stabbing anyone. No one has a better temperament than me.

Went to my Mom's so there was none.

None of this shit matters. I know a lot of you want to believe it does, but it doesn't.

If I went to my Grandma's on my Dad's side of the family it would have just been my Grandpa and Uncle talking nonstop about this shit and still finding a way to bitch about Democrats even though their guy won.

My father law proudly wore his Make America Great Again hat. I attempted to explain the benefits of free trade after telling them what NAFTA stood for. When I said we voted for Johnson, they asked me who that was.

I just spent the day telling the family about Nas, Long Time Guy and City of Fools regarding election issues. It took up most of the day.

I'm not sure when someone's personal political views became something to bring up out of the blue. I was taught early on that politics and religion are personal things that shouldn't be forced on anyone in polite conversation.

Now it's commonplace.

I actually have a rule I don't talk about politics in person with anyone.

I just change the subject to "Jay Cutler really sucks doesn't he?" but it doesn't get the same disagreement it used to.

Since Obama ran for president. I was taught the same thing but over the past 10 years that's changed. Even on this board there weren't any political threads prior to 2007.

Mom Brick: Oh, hi, guys! Guess what Brick... Your dad already messed up. He got me the wrong green beans for the casserole.

Dad Brick (in adjacent room): Those green beans are fine and that is what you told me to get. That's exactly what you said.

Mom Brick: It is not. It is literally the opposite of what I said.

Dad Brick: I don't care, anyway. I'm not even a fan of green beans. I had a great green bean casserole in 2005, so I'm good. All I need is a great stuffing in my lifetime, and I'll be content with all Thanksgiving dishes.

Brick himself: Mom, who cares? The biggest thing is that you don't undercook it.

Mom Brick: Undercook it? I've never undercooked it. It was 200 degrees last year, which is fine.

Brick: 200 degrees? There are other families who do way better. What is your prediction for the temperature of these green beans that would be appropriate? What's the number?

Mom Brick: I don't even care. You always say you don't like my cooking anyway. I guess you care now!

Wife Brick: You told me you guys would stop this if I rooted for the Sox in 2005. You lied.

Baby Brick (first words): "To-fousan fife."

Wife Brick: Oy

My father, a hard core democrat, and my aunt, a hard core republican, used to have some doozies back in the day.

One time we were having dinner and my aunt told my dad, "I need some financial help, could you loan me 1500 dollars?" My father told my mother to get her checkbook and write her a check. As my mom is writing the check my aunt tells my dad, "Oh thank you so much, you don't know how much this means to me as I have always wanted to go to the Republican National Convention."

The look on my dads face as he realized he had been had was priceless

politics on the holidays isn't the problem. it's what politics people focus on. if everyone would watch and debate what is going on in their local jurisdictions the entire country would be very different. the feds should be nothing more than a reflection of whats going on with the people, but theyre not because people dont fight over what their community is doing... everyone just focuses on a dozen or so people at the top- people that cant do jack shit for the millions of us out there because no matter what they chose, a bunch of us won't like the decision.
