conducting a scientific poll here.

I tend conservative, but note, I have never voted for a republican for national office.

I identify with a lot of libertarian viewpoints but I would never call myself a libertarian because I understand that the libertarian philosophy, if truly implemented in some practical manner, would obviously result in the richest/strongest doing whatever the fuck they wanted.

I'll pencil you in on the conservative side.

Libertarians do not fit on the traditional left/right spectrum. They are socially liberal and fiscally conservative. That being said, when forced to vote, I do so for conservatives.

If you are hell bent on compartmentalizing people, then it is probably a good idea to define the compartments.

Even if you are just doing a "scientific" poll.

When you put forth conservative ideas, you tend to feel the heat from left leaning folks. Nas is getting it from the other side because he has been highly critical of all things Trump. So he is getting the heat from opposing views.

I always felt the board had a liberal bent, but it is probably better to state that the board in general is more liberal than me. Meaning plenty of right of center guys, but they're still largely left of me.

So funny. I always think conservatives are less likable. I feel the same way about Cubs fans over Sox fans (Cubs fans clearly more annoying). Maybe it's something that you see the silliness of "your own".

Yeah, I'd have to agree. The definitions of Liberal and Conservative are constantly changing. The definition of a Classical Liberal is someone who values individual rights, free markets, and limited government, but I don't think most would say that is the modern-day definition.

It's so difficult to encapsulate one's beliefs on the Left-Right continuum, particularly nowadays. I would venture a guess that most would call me Liberal, but I don't think I am (though it doesn't bother me either way).

I also believe that it depends on a few different contexts. If we were starting America over again, I would absolutely be a Libertarian (a true Libertarian, not Scorehead Libertarian). I would love to see local politics be the main driver of how an area is politically, not a national government with a "one size fits all" view. I would also like to see a small military, free markets without liability protection for corporations, and social policies that allow people to do pretty much anything as long as they're not infringing on the rights of others.

However, from a practical perspective, that ship has sailed. If we tried to immediately transition to a true Libertarian-style government, there would be too much short-term pain to maintain public approval. Therefore, in the short-term, I don't think I would fall in either bucket because it is completely dependent on the current situation. Health care is a good example. I am in favor of single payer (which is certainly not a Libertarian belief) because I think it's the only way to fix the current system we have (which is a complete cluster) while trying to maintain some semblance of both equality and efficiency.

In conclusion, I am neither, IMO.

I think it depends who you're surrounded by. Both are annoying, but if you are around one more than the other, they're more likely to irritate you. You live in the city (I think) and Rick spent a number of years in a Liberal cesspool.

My family and friends are all conservative, so they tend to irritate me more.

I don't think there's any way you could define the terms that I wouldn't "tend toward" liberalism.

This is why even though I believe I am liberal, I would never want to be called such. Modern liberalism tends more toward fascist authoritarianism.

In a similar vein, I have always considered myself a feminist in as much as I believe men and woman are equals, but the label "feminist" as it is currently used connotes a set of philosophies and ideas that are so outre, e.g. all vaginal sex is rape, that I would never want to be called a feminist.

I'm not sure about that. I guess it depends what we mean by "liberal". I don't believe in private ownership of real estate. I'd call that a pretty radical left wing view.
