Dumb Holiday Traditions

For most of my childhood and into my young adult years my mother would always "expect" me to attend Midnight Mass with her on Christmas Eve.

Being raised Catholic and living in a home with a mother who was very Catholic, the very thought of missing Midnight Mass was enough to send me directly to hell. That fear was instilled in me very early and, admittedly, I think about it once in awhile as I no longer attend. It's funny how some things stick with you over the years. Like herpes. Or Don Tiny.

Regardless, the mass itself was the apotheosis of boredom. A good portion of it was in Slovenian, the choir sang seven additional verses of Silent Night that no one new existed, and there was no chance you got home before 1:30am.

I went to midnight mass once. And I was pretty drunk. I slept through most of it.

I can't think of many traditions we had as a kid that were dumb, per se...

Were there extra candles used at the Midnight Mass?

  At the Lutheran Christmas Eve services as a kid, they usually passed out individual candles for each person. Ugie would have loved it.

My wife loves to go to midnight mass though she is an atheist. The Lord works in mysterious ways. I hate being tired the next morning.

Not to mention a rousing chorus or two of Stille Nacht.

Slovenians are low on the hierarchy of South Slavs, which are themselves lower than all West Slavs

You mean socially or that they typically squat lower to the ground?

Every year we ate the blood of Christ(or something like that). I always wanted to put some Cheez Whiz on the blood of Christ but it probably wouldn't have gone well.

Eating Cheez Whiz off the Body of Christ doesn't sound right.

I think I served at midnight mass like 3 or 4 times...
yes, I was an altar boy for 8 years. no, i was not touched inappropriately.

We used to do Chinese Food on Christmas Eve, but the wife doesn't care for it so we stopped. She wants to cook.
