See? This is where it gets fun! http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/poli ... /97281828/ Quote: Senate Democrats block two Trump Cabinet picks by boycotting vote WASHINGTON — Led by Sens. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Ron Wyden of Oregon, a clutch of Senate Democrats temporarily blocked committee votes on two of Trump’s Cabinet nominees Tuesday by refusing to participate in a vote. The Senate Finance Committee was scheduled to vote Tuesday morning on Steve Mnuchin, tapped by the new president to be Treasury secretary. But Brown and other Democrats refused to attend the session, thus denying Republicans a quorum and preventing the vote from occurring. The committee was also scheduled to vote Tuesday on Trump’s choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, GOP Rep. Tom Price of Georgia. Brown has vociferously opposed Mnuchin, and his spokeswoman said Tuesday that he organized the boycott at the last minute. Brown has objected to Mnuchin’s "cozy ties to Wall Street" and sharply questioned his leadership of a bank that was involved in questionable foreclosure practices. Mnuchin "failed to answer critical questions about the fortune he made while military service members, seniors, and working families got kicked out of their homes,” Brown said in a Jan. 19 statement announcing his opposition to the nominee. Republicans on the panel blasted the move as an unprecedented “dereliction of duty” and a partisan jab that would damage comity in the Senate. It's SO "unprecedented" that it didn't happen just last year when they refused to even hold a hearing for SCOTUS! |

I don't like it. This is nothing more than grandstanding for their base. These nominees will easily be approved. |

There's a difference between using parliamentary procedure and just not showing up to work. |

They can't act like the GOP did, blocking everything simply because it was a Democrat's idea. |

So the Dems decide to not participate in a vote and that's not "doing their job?" |

Democrats engage in the same activity they decried for the past 8 years. Republicans decry the same activity they engaged in for the past 8 years. And the world keeps spinning. |

It was a good move that the Senators refused to give Obama another Supreme Court nominee. The Democrats can pull this crap for awhile, but in 2 years a lot of their Senators in states where Trump won are up for re-election. It's quite possible that the Republicans could pick up more seats. |

I've predicted MANY times that the filibuster is going bye bye this year. I can't wait to see the outcry when that happens. And then people will politely point out that Mr Reid upended part just a few short years ago. The Democracy is barely functioning. Obama was basically forced to take executive action because Congress wouldn't do anything. He was using recess appointments just to fill vacancies. Immigration is massively broken. They haven't passed a regular budget in forever. The co-equal branches have basically come down to a fight between the executive and judicial as Congress sits on the sidelines and opens up a dozen Benghazi investigations. |

Well, maybe you're referring to my strong feelings on the matter. There's a lot of value in learning history and certainly in understanding how government functions. My comments on this matter are merely about educating people for real world jobs that pay enough money to cover the cost of a college education. My first two years at college as a pre-Med/BioChem undergrad were in the following types of classes: -English, -Sociology, -Psychology, -Symbol Logic, -British History, -American History, -Government systems, -Roman Civ My undergrad is in BioChem, and I had exactly three BioChem classes in a 120 credit program. No shock to me, when I went into the workforce to find a job, I am told that you need a Master's degree and really a phd in this field to do anything more than run lab equipment. |

The co-equal branches have basically come down to a fight between the executive and judicial as Congress sits on the sidelines and opens up a dozen Benghazi investigations. I would say that having Trump as President is proof that the democracy is still functioning, for he was elected despite all the efforts by the Democrats and MSM to rig the election in Hillary's favor, first by marginalizing Bernie and then running fake news stories that Trump couldn't win because there was no path to victory through the blue wall. Little happened legislatively the last four years because you had one party in control of the executive, while the other party controlled the legislative. Obama and the Democrats pissed off the Republicans by ramming through Obama care-without any Republican support. Obama deserved the treatment he got for his Supreme court nominee. I suspect a lot will get done now legislatively with Trump in charge and Republicans with sizable majorities in the House and Senate. All Democrats can do is bitch and moan, but they have no one to blame for themselves for their own predicament and enfeeblement. They ignored the will of the people for far too long, Obama especially. His progressive globalist agenda was and is not America. He forgot we're patriots, at least those who are born here. |

They were awesome for me. I went into college with significant AP credits in calc B/C, physics, and Chemistry. I am a proponent of career track based education in high school and beyond. Instead of general education, I would like to see a more focused approach to career path planning. As someone who tutored a lot of kids in algebra and calculus, there is an entire subset of kids that are never going to be proficient in math. The same applies to other subjects. Then there are kids who are clearly not cut out for an academic path and would be much more suited for a technical track- repairing cars, plumbing, hairdressers. All of those are perfectly legit careers with decent earning prospects. We have kids graduating high school with these general diplomas, and what are they qualified to actually do? |

Mike, yes I had other science courses, several genetics, general bio, organic and physical chem, etc. But my degree is BioChem, and I only had three classes-two lectures and one lab. So basically, I memorized the chemical structure of the 20 base amino acids, DNA, transcription, translation, and replication. That's about all you can get in two lectures. Then we worked on PCR and HPLC machines in lab. I was qualified for exactly nothing. I didn't want to go to med school at that point, which was the real path after getting that degree. Then you go interview at Abbott and Baxter, and the recruiters pretty much laugh when you talk about going into drug research. I ended running GC machines until I went back to grad school. |
