Andrew Johnson should be last on every list and George Washington should always be #1. The Roosevelts should be 2 and 3. Everything else is debatable.

The only problems with Ike were (a) he recognized Nixon for what he was and used him for that purpose, and (b) he let Churchill cajole him into fucking with Iran so BP & Aramco could keep making their oil money. One wonders what history might look like if Ike had stuck to his guns and said 'no' as a final answer.

Lincoln was better in nearly every way including ending the legacy that Washington left behind that threatened to destroy the county. And he signed legislation establishing land grant universities. Washington's biggest contribution was walking away.

Nas, I know you are stashing some contrarian opinion about Lincoln, but I really don't see how there's an argument that he is overrated. Whether what he did was for political reasons or not, he accomplished great things for the country.

I don't understand why you dismiss the fact that he didn't do it because of his strong conviction about how WRONG slavery was. He just wanted to weaken the south. The fact that it was political is very important when discussing the character of the man and ranking him as a president. MANY pretend that he cared about black America when he didn't. Lincoln wanted to send blacks back to Africa.

Beyond that his power grabs and disregard of the constitution makes President Trump's dick hard.

Yeah, but he was probably still more progressive than most at that time. Obviously, not being 100% against slavery or equality was wrong, but I think you do have to take into account the context of the era in which he lived. Societal norms are hard things to overcome. Your boy George H.W. probably would have been pro-slavery if he'd lived in that time period.

Slavery, which was so obviously horrible in hindsight, was something that would never have been easily overcome given how it basically drove the economy of the South. For an issue like that which has no guarantee of ever being banished, I think the ends justify the means. If Lincoln hadn't overreached, slavery might not have ended. Now that I think of it, maybe we should be praising Trump. :wink:

The man ended slavery, and he's to be blamed for not being progressive enough by today's standards? That's harsh. Lincoln was literally a martyr for black rights. And his "power grab" was in response to half the country rebelling over his winning of a fair election. What should he have done? Let the country be divided, and have a slave economy state in collusion with European powers on this continent? Winning that war ended up saving many lives in the long run, many of them black.

And as for moving slaves back to Africa, it was an idea that seemed humanitarian at the time. There were black leaders that supported it.
