Now the CEO is on video berating and fingerpointing a driver. This is after reports that the company STILL isn't profitable and never will be at the current slave rates unless they take a larger cut from drivers or got lucky with a technological breakthrough in self driving.

Rideshare will NEVER be profitable for the drivers. I know this first hand, it's a sub-minimum wage job that depreciates and expensive asset to the point of worthlessness. Uber may have more PR problems than Lyft, but it still has a lot more riders and if they cannot be profitable Lyft cannot either. So does this mean that when the bear market hits in the next 12 to 18 mo.s and investors become more shy about propping these companies up that this whole rideshare fad disappears?

Cabs and LY's, say what you will about them, but they are profitable for drivers and companies.

I don't understand the Uber hate. Don't be mad that you were a driver and it wasn't as lucrative as you thought America. Even with your ways of scamming the system.

Its more about the good paying jobs that it "disrupts" than the idiotic gold rushing drivers who line up to lose their lunch to uncle Travis. Uber has destroyed the cab industry on the backs of VC money covering its operating losses, not on merit or profitability.

I've only used Lyft twice, and both rides were perfectly fine and very convenient.

Driverless will be here soon. And Uber is a household name. So I do not know if bad PR is enough to bring them down. What video?

"Driverless will be here soon" - you cannot possibly be certain of this. Either post a screencap of your investment portfolio putting your money where you mouth is or quit talking out of your ass. The timetable of driverless cars has been completely obfuscated by the blogging-industrial complex's insatiable desire to pump future tech whether or not its feasible. The engineers who are actually working on these things dont know when they'll be ready.

You think with all of that money at stake it will not be here? Why would my meager investments prove anything? They will figure it out. Do you use GPS? If you can't foresee how that will work, then I don't know what to say. This technology is not that difficult to conceive.

If venture to guess any losses uber is incurring is strictly on the driver automation side of the business. Perhaps a little more on the legal side as they are sued in every market they enter. Sure, uber may fail. But the ride share concept will eventually win out over traditional taxi.

I don't see how they couldnt be profitable right now if they only focused on the app and drivers. Even if uber or lyft cost the same as a cab, if take it over the convenience of it being app based and in any major city im in.

Both Uber and Lyft are slowly raising their rates by hiding what percentage of a surge price they are adding. I had two rides in Chicago on Monday, from Ohio/Rush to LaSalle/Jackson, and back. Both times, I got a city taxi for about a buck lower than the quoted Lyft price, with absolutely no wait instead of "4 minutes." One thing I noticed was that the Chicago taxis have stepped up their game. Both taxis were immaculate, the credit card technology was a reasonable 50 cent surcharge and actually encouraged by one of the drivers.

There are still cities where I much prefer Lyft (and if I have to, Uber). But I think the gap will eventually close.

The issue with driverless is not the vehicle. It is the infrastructure and the public policy. Things like retrofitting stop lights to transmit to driverless vehicles. Or how to stop a platoon of seven electronically connected trucks along the side of the Edens when the fourth truck gets a flat tire.

VC firms will make a killing after the eventual IPO. Check out Snap's IPO to see how these things go. Now Theranos, well that's a nice implossion where its backers will get killed.

You can apply the "its why its called gambling not winning" adage to VC.

Most big time VCs make huge money though.

It's a good amount of money to get a ride to the airport in a cab from a lot of suburbs. Does anyone know if Uber is cheaper than getting a cab to an airport from the suburbs?

You dumbass, the cars can drive themselves all they want, if the infrastructure isn't there to handle it properly, it's not going to mean shit.

1. Self-driving cars should be able to have shorter following distances. This has already been demonstrated in truck platooning for the military. That means less congestion, but only if driver-operated cars don't get in the fucking way. Are you going to let some streets be driverless only? And if so, are the poor people going to scream that you're favoring the rich?

2. Self-driving cars need to be able to "speak" to the infrastructure. Stop lights, emergency vehicles, that kind of shit. Chicago can't maintain what it has, are they going to have the money to upgrade four fucking stop lights every mile to properly leverage the self-driving vehicles?

3. Insurance is going to be completely different. How are states which are insurance company heavy going to replace the jobs and the tax revenue? Less tax revenue, less things like public transportation.

Just a few questions. "Pass a few laws?" Do you see what's happening in this country? Nobody can pass laws about anything. The left is going to scream that self-driving cars are a tool of the rich and Google and Amazon are going to make all the money and that poor urban minorities are going to get screwed. The rural right Bannonite white males are going to scream because they're the poor bastards who have to drive 50 miles on an empty four lane road through cornfields to take their girlfriend to a fucking Applebee's, and they want a self driving car so they can get a blowjob on the way home. You actually think passing laws and setting policies for this shit is going to be easy?

Once you get out about 15 miles, the pre-arranged suburban cabs like 303 and American are a little cheaper during busy periods because they are flat rate. From where I live, American is about $1.75/mile after tip, but no per-minute surcharge.

Driver was probably America.

Not sure how self-driving car discussion has morphed into roadhead on the way back from Applebee's, but you are overthinking the regulations with Uber. There is an anti-regulation president in the White House, and Uber's play has been to break rules and apologize.
