Do you receive a tax credit even if you have employee-sponsored insurance? We should FYI. Poor people shouldn't because then they'll be motivated to find a job. |

Quote: The legislation would preserve two of the most popular features of the 2010 health-care law, letting young adults stay on their parents’ health plans until age 26 and forbidding insurers to deny coverage or charge more to people with preexisting medical problems. Selfishly the parent's insurance rule was great. I stayed on my parent's plan just so I wouldn't have to pay for insurance MYSELF. And in case I did have a medical issue (I didn't) then my medical issue would've help chip away at the family deductible. The age-26 rule encapsulates how broken health insurance is for MANY. This "perk" shouldn't exist. ![]() |

The dumbest part is fighting the individual mandate. The mandate was great. If you are going to force hospitals to provide emergency care to anyone then you can force people to buy insurance. I doubt anyone would choose to not have insurance if the government didn't guarantee if they have a bad fall or heart attack the hospital can't say 'Sorry but you messed up'. |

Isn't Social Security mandated retirement contributions? I think the issue is the politics of calling it what it is- a tax. The "individual mandate" is designed to counteract that and at worst do a small amount of funding for that "free benefit" we all get. All of the free market people who don't want the government telling them that they have to buy health insurance or pay a relatively minor fine should be told that if they enter an emergency room with severe stomach pain that the hospital can be like "Too bad you opted out of your ability to be treated" or in a less severe method of getting people in line let people opt out of the individual mandate but tell them if they enter an emergency room for care during the calendar year they will be taxed at a rate for that year of 30 times that of the individual mandate for that year. And yes, because it always gets brought up, the poor don't really have to worry about the individual mandate since they are eligible for medicaid. |

Boilermaker Rick wrote: The issue here is that every single person in this country is guaranteed the right to walk into any emergency room in the country and get medical care regardless of insurance or ability to pay. The thing is, that was also the case prior to Obamacare. Emergency rooms did not turn people away...they just charged paying or insured customers $12 for a Tylenol to offset the people who couldn't pay. It wasn't a perfect system, but it had the advantage of limiting the overuse of the medical system. With Obamacare, health "insurance" morphed into something very different than the concept of insurance. It has turned into a system that essentially allows you to buy fire insurance as your house is burning down, and be reimbursed for fixing the brakes on your car. |

Has anyone's annual insurance enrollment at work for 2017 started? Any feedback on cost/increases? Mine is in May. Last year(my company's partners) did a pretty good job keeping the benefits the same without costs going up too much, but they warned 2017 could be a shitstorm. |

Last year(my company's partners) did a pretty good job keeping the benefits the same without costs going up too much, but they warned 2017 could be a shitstorm. Our small company's premiums went up 27% with slightly worse coverage (higher deductibles and out-of-pocket). That was for a renewal with Blue Cross. The other options that our broker presented were even higher. Over the last few years, every year has been around a 20-30% increase. |
