Today is supposed to be the day the SEC rules on letting this non-currency get shorted to hell by Wall St. or simply decides it has lived out it's days of being useful (it was never, really) and needs to be put down.

ETF's have that same feel as Auction Rate Securities, meaning if there is ever extreme volatility in the market, those securities are going to fail to trade. I know ETF's are the mutual fund du jour these days, but I am avoiding them like the plague. There is an illusion of liquidity with ETF's, but I don't trust the mechanism that allows them to trade throughout the day.

I love the concept of a private currency like Bitcoin. I just don't have enough faith in it that I would buy bitcoins. If I had a more powerful PC, I'd perhaps try mining them for the fun of it, but that's it.

They are not really private and the days of mining them have long since passed. There are a few college kids who made a lot of money mining these things 5+ years ago and selling them when it had its first bubble.

a couple'a sundays ago when i was coming home from that rap show some chick gets on my red line car like "I NEED $4 FOR A SANDWICH... JUST $4, I KNOW THAT YOU GUYS HERE CAN HELP ME OUT" and when everyone ignored her she started getting in people's faces like "YOU HAVE A NICE WATCH! LOOK AT THAT CELLPHONE! YOU'RE GONNA TELL ME THAT I CAN'T EAT?!?!" and all kinds of "doing it wrong" that made me just kinda groan. when she came up to me i'm like "sorry, i'm thirsty for that defense" and since she didnt seem to know what i meant i said "dude i'm a heroin addict, as a matter of fact if i don't come up with something soon/ish i'm going to start melting down so can you help me out with $2 for a bag?" -- suffice to say i didnt get shouted at about how my nice phone = TELLING HER THAT SHE CAN'T EAT. some ~teenagers across from me were like "whoa" at how i deftly handled the situation.

so of course, ~3-4 days later on weds/thurs i'm on the red line again AND THE SAME CHICK GETS IN MY L CAR ASKING FOR THE SAME $4 FOR A SANDWICH!!!!! suffice to say, she knew better than to ask my funky ass this time around =P

Some of them are legit (like the QQQ), but many are outright scams. Before I knew better, I put some money into an ETF that was supposed to track the Vix, and lost almost my entire investment even though the Vix was rising (it felt like options trading, where you can be right about which way a stock will move and still get your ass kicked). Most of those ETFs, especially the leveraged ones, are riskier than Vegas.

Jaw, you are right about the commodity and leveraged ETF's. But at their most basic level, there is an illusion about being able to trade these all day vs. mutual funds that price one a day. People love that feature with ETF's, but the functionality of how they trade all day is not well grounded. The ETF managers have to balance the order books and use lines of credit such that those ETF's are mispriced from their underlying asset value much like a closed end fund. I know for a fact that when we have a big drop in the market, people will not be able to sell those, and then they become just like a regular mutual fund.

I used to invest heavily in ETF's. Now I mainly trade individual stocks because I'm rich.
