Am I the last sports fan left who is universally against my favorite teams tanking games? Whenever the Bulls, White Sox, or Packers are playing, I will always root for them to win. There are no exceptions to this rule. From what I can gather, almost everybody else is ok with it. I'm not saying this is some noble thing, it's just how I view sports. I guess it's "smart" to want your team to build up number 1 draft picks for however many years in a row or whatever, but I just never could wrap my head around the idea of wanting your own team to lose. |

I am consistent in my distaste for tanking. |

I was until some leagues made it a virtual necessity.

If my team has no legitimate chance to win a title in the current season I would prefer them to tank than to try and win meaningless regular season games... Generally if my team has no title chances I'm not really interested in watching them play |

Tanking has gotten out of control. Now teams are shutting down healthy players just to lose even more games. I know teams that are rebuilding are going to suck for a couple years, but shutting down guys that are completely healthy really sucks. |

I still think Irish Boy's idea of getting rid of the draft is interesting and it would clearly end tanking immediately. |

I'd rather have the Sox win 82 games than 77. I'm not concerned about draft picks. |

I don't remember his idea, but how would the draft be replaced? Would every prospect have an opportunity to sign with whatever team they want, or would their be a new draft with a completely random order? |

I can go along for one year when the situation is dire and FUBAR. You can take your chance at grabbing a stud at the top of a draft. But I'm also an optimist with my teams, so I look at the glass half full many years, which is why I couldn't go more than a year. |

I've seen too much sustained mediocrity in a few of these "premier" Chicago franchises. Tank away. |

So let's leverage the talent distribution to the major markets even more than it already is? That's sounds like a horrible idea. |

The NHL should try it. If it kills their league, who cares? If it works well, the other leagues could adopt it and there would be no more tanking it sports and our world would be forever better for it. |

It could but most of the major markets are going to have a tough time paying a premium for players especially as time goes on.The top rookies probably would have to give up a good amount of money to play in LA or NY or Chicago. |

I mean that scenario will never happen, but it's concerning someone of your intellectual ilk would even entertain such a ridiculous notion Brick. |

They're not the league that had to have the commissioner stage a coup in a market of 7,000,000+ to make the team stop tanking. The NHL's problem is that teams like the Oilers and Avs keep drafting first overall and still suck, not because they're tanking for more high picks but because they're run by imbeciles and come to their failure naturally. |

Why is it ridiculous? This is what happens in European leagues and as we learned from Bernie Sanders, everything in Europe is better! |

You would have to try it in a league with a hard cap. |

We already have some veterans who want to make a super-team even if it costs them a little bit of long-term dough ... now if we basically allow college kids the same choice, at first blush it seems to me that you're basically gonna have a choice of making good dough playing for a shit team or (potentially massively) undercutting your earning potential to play with the Cavs and Warriors of the world. |

Boilermaker Rick wrote: I still think Irish Boy's idea of getting rid of the draft is interesting and it would clearly end tanking immediately. Interesting. As an alternate, what about a pure lottery that is not weighted, so that tanking has no value? I do not like tanking, so I cheer for my team to win every game. However, I totally appreciate what the Cubs and now White Sox did/are doing. The rebuild is fine with me especially when you have a mix of players that just aren't working. |

How much of the NBA's tanking (and let's be honest, that's where it's the biggest problem of the four) can be solved with an unweighted lottery? Would Sam Hinkie have bottomed out year after year if he were just as likely to draft 14th as he was to draft 1st? EDIT: denis beat me to it |

I am against tanking -- it's lazy. I don't give Theo kudos for "the plan" (even though obviously several individual transactions worked out, and they ended up winning). |
