Listening to a podcast today and someone posed the question "is there a difference between bullshit and horseshit?" At first I looked up at the ceiling and exclaimed what am I doing with my life and then as they began to discuss it I came around on the idea. The general summary of this guys argument was this:

Bullshit is used to describe a disruptive occurrence that isn't caused by a specific person, example (games related of course) "Me dying right there was bullshit."

Horseshit is used to describe the actions of someone acting in a disruptive, more specifically unsporting, manner, example (again, games) "You picking Oddjob sure was some horseshit."

Lo, there was a third example given that had me buying into this line of thinking completely: dog shit.

Dog shit is used to describe something that sucks, example "This game sure is a pile of dog shit"

So, what say you? Happy Friday everyone.

I like the topic. Here are my typical usages.

Dogshit is usually food, weather or health related for me.

Bullshit is used more as an exclamation. You get cut off in traffic. That's bullshit!!!

Horseshit describes a task or job to do. Cleaning up the tree line by my house each spring is horseshit because its full of trash from the park next door. Have to do my horseshit taxes.

Since I am clearly not funny, I'll interject the farmer talk. Yes, BIG difference. Ruminants (cows, bulls, deer, etc) with four stomachs are able to convert the fibrous stems of grasses and plants better than the single-stomached equine or porcine animals. Most of the stink is related to the diet- hogs usually finished on ground corn/soybean meal, that stuff really ferments and smells, horses typically survive on grass hay, often much less odor. Bulls, whose one purpose is to stay just alive enough to breed all the cows, often are not fed the top notch diet, so their waste may be even above average stinky. Our cows eat both ground corn and hay, and smell bad, according to my wife and kids. But, the nutritional value of the manure when used as fertilizer has kept me from buying any commercial fertilizer for decades.TMYK
