Basically Mike Pence claims he has never had dinner alone with a member of the opposite sex who wasn't his wife. I'm almost positive I haven't either since I started dating my future wife besides family. I'm also pretty sure we each would find it bizarre to do it.

Why are people so worked up here? Are they just looking for anything to latch on to?

I've had my neighbor over for dinner when my fiancée or home or not. She's big into sports. I don't think it's odd

And I've had lunch with a female coworker who I've known for a decade plus. Shockingly, no infidelity occurred.

I don't think he would disagree with this either. I just don't get why it is a big deal that he chooses not to eat dinner alone with another woman. It may make him or his wife uncomfortable even if there isn't going to be anything sexual out of it.

It's just kind of ironic so many people who say "Republicans need to stop telling others what to do with their bodies and who they can love" but all of a sudden a guy chooses not to have dinner alone with another woman and suddenly we can all judge his choices and get mad at him and tell him that his relationship is messed up and he needs to work on self control.

I don't think lunches have the same "romantic" connotations as dinner. It's always dinner and a movie, for example. An invitation to lunch is sort of casual because it's the middle of the day and you can presume both of you will separately head on to other things afterwards, whether that's work or other plans. Dinner is different because you're presumably off work and can be social for a longer period of time. Not saying anything either way with regards to Pence but I'd say an invitation to dinner alone can definitely be taken differently than an invitation to lunch.

obviously most of the time nothing is going to happen. my father is a marriage counselor and i asked him about this and he said it was a prudent preventative measure. He said most infidelity starts with a dinner sometimes even lunch. a coworker, etc etc. Obviously going out to dinner with a coworker doesn't mean sex is imminent which is the joke right? but guardrails are usually a few feet away from the cliff or drop off. Having guardrails is good.

I would say as a nearing 40 yr old man, a good number of my friends have already gone through divorce and most of them are because of infidelity and i think its safe to assume they started with a meal with someone of the opposite sex.

i have a number of women that i could go to dinner with and my wife wouldn't blink. however, i just don't usually have reason to and don't. we never had that actual policy.

what about fourthmeal ?

I have two close female friends I get dinner with here and there. I also have a platonic work wife I've gotten food and drinks with after work.

I'm trying to think if I have. Lunch yes, with people trying to sell me stuff and a few old friends while passing through an area but I think the last time I did dinner was when I was not yet married or engaged and even then it was a bit strange in retrospect.

I don't think it's weird to go out to dinner with a woman you aren't married too, especially if it's a co-worker or you are at a conference. That said, I think people are piling on Pence. If his arrangement works for him it's unfair to turn him into so sort of freak show.

It's fine if you're single but if you're in a serious relationship then you have to ditch all of your friends of the opposite sex. I mean, you can talk casually through text once in a blue moon but nothing more than that. No lunch, no dinner.

The business requires business meetings and some of those meetings are one on one with women. I trust those women can control themselves after getting a whiff of my manly musk.

I did represent an oriental massage parlor once and had dinner with the female owner after a meeting. She did ask if I wanted to go to the place for a massage afterwards. I politely declined but I don't think it was any more of a sexual request than if I had asked her to go to my office to do research.

I worked under a female partner when I was starting out. We worked late hours. We went to dinner often. She had dragon breath and straw hair so she wasn't getting the kielbasa under any circumstances. However, the most despicable thing about her is that she always wanted to split the check or make me pay for food. Here was a woman making mid six figures AND who had an expense account with the firm but she was such a cheap ass she is making a junior associate working extra hours pick up petty cash level meals. She pulled that shit with some other guy who was lower on the totem pole than even me. I never understood the stereotype of the Welsh being cheap until I met her

I only eat meals with people I am attracted to. This allows me to practice self-control while simultaneously filling my spank bank to the brim. I find it helps the day go by much faster.

I think there's a difference between not eating dinner with the opposite sex, and having a rule that you would never have dinner with the opposite sex under any conditions. The former is understandable, the latter makes you weird and worthy of derision.
