Has anyone ever hosted a foreign student? If so, what was your experience?

We have done it the last five years, and Pepe will return again this summer.

Great experience for us.

Yes, i have been both an exchange student myself, and we hosted a South Korea student for one semester. As an exchange student, I had a great time. It is one of the best experiences of my life. I was in Costa Rica as a freshman in high school.

As for hosting, it was a ton more work than we ever imagined. There was so much extra driving around. We went into it really excited and were completely worn out by the end of the semester. We decided against hosting for another semester. We had some fun, but the Korean never gelled with my kids. We all got along, but she was quite insular, and my kids aren't exactly outgoing. I basically had three kids each hiding in their rooms and sitting on their cell phones.

Opt for the 18 year old Brazilian female student.

I may have to do it for a week in order for my kid to visit another country for language. It sounds like I will be doing a lot of driving and buying different food for that kid to eat. That's for starters. I also have to attend every field trip for the week and hang around after school with other families to do crap. The school is trying to assure me that it isn't hard.

Different food? Isn't the point of an exchange student coming here is to experience the typical American life? Wouldn't you just serve him/her what you normally serve your family?

Barcelona. They have to spend the next several months becoming pen pals and video messaging and stuff.

That's what I thought. They told me that I need to try to accommodate the child.

He will do fine with our food. And be happy to do so. Though I do make a pretty good tortilla de patata now.

Pepe is from Sant Cugat. A suburb of Barcelona.

We took him to Cafe Iberico last summer after almost three years.

The biggest challenge may be the student becoming homesick. Age is not really a factor in whether it happens or not either.

He may not be accustomed to African Americans. Barcelona has the most diverse residents of any Spanish city, but it is still predominantly locals.

I assume that your son is working on his Spanish. I ask because Catalan is often spoken in Barcelona.

Three weeks in Spain last summer and Little Crest's Spanish increased exponentially.
