Was reading this article about Jose Reyes and this tidbit in the article jumped out at me.

Quote:
According to Brian Niemietz of the New York Daily News, Sanchez and Reyes had a daughter together, and they acted as Reyes' road family: "We'd go to restaurants, go to games, go shopping, that was the life I was living. It was a double life, but I wanted him to be a father of our child."

Sanchez is currently suing Reyes for a child support increase from $11,000 to $41,000 per month for their seven-year-old daughter.

41,000 per month for child support??? Holy hell. I get that this dude makes a lot of money. But no one needs that much money to raise a child.

When I saw this posted I was going to say the "Congratulations RFDC" thread was actually quite mean.

Statutory guidelines, bro.

The large amounts of celebrity child support always amazes me but it shouldn't. It is based on the child having the lifestyle as if they were with the celebrity parent. Not just an amount to get by.

Yup. If Reyes is living the lifestyle that he is then his kid deserves to live the same one.

Do you really think?

Isn't child support mean to provide the basic necessities?

I believe legally that child support is designed to support your child in the lifestyle you have. That's why it isn't just a set number.

No. Spiral Stairs can tell you. If he was representing the woman, he'd be asking for the amount too. Assuming the laws are the same/similar to Illinois in whatever state they're in. I think it would be pursuant to 750 ILCS 5/505, the guideline for one child is 20% after the deductions. That doesn't mean the judge can't deviate from the guideline though.

In Illinois, it's based on a percentage of your income, depending on how many kids exist. My buddy had to pay his ex child support for three kids. They took 35% of his money every week.

I think three kids is actually 32%, but you may be correct. They change these statutes all the time.

I guess I don't think a child deserves to have the lifestyle of their biological father. They deserve to have their needs taken care of.

I will wait to divorce my wife until after my kids are adults

Gotta disagree with my homie RFDC here. If the father is a multi-millionaire, the kid should get a reasonable amount relative to that wage.

Maybe it was 32%, but it is based on the number of kids.

It is what it is as the particular state settles that. What puzzles me is the ex athletes or celebriies that don't somehow go back to court when they are done. They should be able to lower those large amounts. Yet you read all the time about the Rodman's of the world still paying a ton.

Yeah I just have a hard time being too upset over someone getting more money in a month than I make and yet needing that raised by 3 times

(1) The Court shall determine the minimum amount of support by using the following guidelines:
Number of Children: Percent of Supporting Party's Net Income
1: 20%
2: 28%
3: 32%
4: 40%
5: 45%
6 or more: 50%

I want to say, they can take up to 40%-50% of your income. But they try to an extent to keep it reasonable. Just so everyone know, IL farms it out to a 3rd party. I have had to call several times for employees, and it is a nightmare. When you talk to someone, make sure to get their direct line. Some are dumb enough to give it.

That was a good joke, but I believe his actual point was about his kids as adults. I'm pretty sure his kids live pretty good lives now.

Is there any oversight to ensure that this "child support" is spent on the kids?

   Yes. What judge wouldn't love spending and entire afternoon listening to some dead-eyed, mouth-breather go through his ex's expenditures line item by line item to ensure that his $25 a week in support is being spent "properly"?

PS. The IL child support statute is changing starting July 1st. PM me for all the exiting details!
