Naperville Central is usually the school with all the issues in this district.

Quote:
Student petition says too much pressure to succeed at Naperville North
Suzanne Baker

A student petition criticizing Naperville North High School for putting too much pressure on students to succeed academically quickly gained attention Thursday, and District 203 officials said they are reviewing the issue.

Just one day after being posted on change.org, nearly 700 people had signed an online document by Thursday afternoon calling on schools to treat students like people with dreams and not just test scores.

After being shared on social media, comments have been pouring in from Naperville students as well as students and adults from neighboring districts and other states, including Arizona, Texas and Utah.

The 1,437-word essay that accompanies the petition says students are pushed to take college-prep and Advance Placement courses and urged to participate in extracurricular activities where they can take leadership roles in order to add items to their resumes and improve their chances of getting into a good college.

"At Naperville North there is one path to success," the petition said. "This path is made clear from the day high school anticipation begins, and is reiterated until graduation. From the age of 13 every prospective Naperville North student understands that this path makes no exceptions, and those who wander off or fall behind are left for failure. Everyone here understands that there is no worse fate than failure."

The petition calls on administrators to, "Start defining success as any path that leads to a happy and healthy life. Start teaching us to make our own paths, and start guiding us along the way."

Naperville School District 203 officials are taking the petition under advisement, said Michelle Fregoso, the district's director of communications.

"We are aware of the change.org petition and are reviewing many of the comments and suggestions," Fregoso said. "Our student and Naperville 203 community feedback is important. By sharing their opinions, they are raising awareness of mental health. We will continue to look for ways to engage our students and community on this important issue."

The petition comes just days after the Naperville North school community was rocked by the loss of one of its own. It was the second unexpected death of a student this year; the first occurred in January.

"Any loss of life, especially one of our students, is tragic. Our community has certainly been impacted this year," school officials said in a statement.

The district is making plans for a roundtable discussion with mental health experts to review current practices and explore ways to better serve students, the statement said.

District 203 has taken steps to address student issues and concerns through the health curriculum, groups for students in need, and weekly school-based, problem-solving teams.

Speakers also have been brought in to discuss strategies to manage anxiety and stress.

In January, nearly 100 members of the community listened to Naperville School District 203 officials explain the new social and emotional learning curriculum that's being launched at all grade levels and into all academic areas.

As such, the District 203 staff has participated in professional development in the area of social and emotional learning.

The good news is one day these pussies will be entering the workforce and competing against us. Should be pretty easy to own them.

I am not even sure why they bother with grades or percentages within your class or anything? Just let people go where they want and study whatever interests them. It should be socially acceptable.

Except to fixers like Bernstein that spends all their time running their kids through Lane or better and Northwestern and pretending to care about education.

Education=Metrics=Daddy

It's become socially unacceptable to be a high-school educated member of the working class. The path to success is now a bachelor's in engineering (or better), or a post-grad degree in something else (law, finance, medicine) so you can spend half of every paycheck at your new $150K a year job on your student loans. So yeah, there is a ton of pressure on kids to take AP classes in science and math, often doubling or tripling up on chemistry/physics/calculus, and even within calc you're told that while AB is nice, BC will put you on a better path to grad school and higher paying jobs once you eventually graduate college.

Anything short of a college education is painted as bad, and not even wanting to seek one is made to appear even worse (like, say, by a mayor wanting to institute a program where you can only get your diploma if you provide proof you've been accepted into college). Bring back shop class, automotive class, stuff like that. Mandate work programs [EDIT: ...be offered...] so kids can split time their junior or senior year learning a trade, so that when they graduate they'll either be certified or know where to go to get certified (crane operation, welding, carpentry, plumbing, etc.). It should be "college or..." not "college or else".

My millennial middle son, working on his BS in Computer science, is home for the weekend. He took a big exam in his "tough" class, second semester of Foundations of Computer Science". The class average was 59. He scored 90. The class whined so much the teacher just emailed this morning that they curved the test 10%.

He says the norm is 10-20% of the class has their homework done at the assigned deadline. The teacher just extends the deadline. Happens in all his classes, CS or others. Frustrates the hell out of him, as he's the "get done ahead of schedule" kind of kid.

Some of the shit in highschool is a little over the top. The wife's nephews are just going through highschool. There is so much pressure even freshman year. The parents where worried about a C freshman year because it would look bad when applying for college.

After seeing the title I was prepared to come in here and shit all over this like the snowflake millennial bullshit it was, but it actually makes a lot of sense after reading it. Those kids are right.

It was refreshing to meet a New Trier graduate at the Avis rental counter at Logan Airport Monday.

Having gone to a highly tracked high school in the 80s where it was culturally normal to take 4 AP classes as a senior and there were kids taking BC calculus as a freshman, I get the angst. But I don't agree with it.

Time (in this case, 4 years)
Quality (of education)
Cost (in this case, taxes for the parents, stress for the kids)

Pick 2.

Maybe some high school students should take more than 4 years, but there's both a social stigma and a cost attached.

Add in the generational sorting of my generation to marry "best and brightest" instead of "the cute one three doors down," and the stress levels for the kids can go off the charts. But that's because the parents think that every little snowflake is entitled to be a straight A student. I have a friend who is a department chair in the JUCO system in another city, and she says the number of kids in her programs who don't want to be there but mommy or daddy insists that they be an accountant or an engineer.. it's insane.

I'm a firm believer in Mike Rowe's campaign to de-stigmatize the trades. And I think the university bubble is going to burst, because the Republicans are going to take aim at the leftist liberal arts universities and hit them where it hurts the most: student loan guarantees.

Man, we had some really stupid kids when I was there. The kind where Daddy sends them to Michigan Tech for a year because he can't bear to go to the country club and admit that Junior can barely spell his name when he's sober, which isn't often.

Sent all three kids to a parochial high school, my alma mater, by choice. When I went, it was early in the school's history, faculty was about 50/50 fabulous/sub-par (looking back now). I still came out ahead of neighborhood friends and college friends. By the time my oldest got there the whole faculty was turned over, of course. He did not over-achieve academically, but did well enough and was completely immersed athletically and socially. But we suffered from not having AP classes available (125 total 9-12 enrollment). It seemed to hurt scholarship chances, but he did well in undergrad and is 4.0 for graduate classes, can't argue with his effort. As a pharmacy student, there is quite a bit of pressure, but not near to med school students, so he says. I look at seven years of tuition at $20-25K each as an investment, the placement rate is 100% with average starting salary $105K last year. Pretty good ROI, and we have been able to cash flow what he has not been able to earn during the summers.

I'm sure the parents who some may have or still are working their asses off so they can afford to live in the district are proud of these whiny kids.

What these fucking ungrateful kids don't realize is a tough high school is going to prepare them for college coursework... And they'll see first hand how kids from shitty high schools will be unprepared and flunk out of college... Source? My high school and college experience

She graduated from Boston College.

Work helps people discover personal dignity and is indispensable to social progress. It was refreshing to work with a young woman who enjoyed her job and serving others.
