There is a correct answer to this question, so be careful.

I cut as I go, so one at a time.

Only a savage pre-cuts his food. You cut one or maybe two pieces at a time.

I cut my food one piece at a time. I cut the kids' food up all at once.

Of course. How else would you do it?

I suppose I could cut one piece at a time, but then I wouldn't eat.

Follow-up question:

In which hand do you hold your knife?

You can cut a few pieces while you're chewing ... chewing is just down-time anyway, so why just sit there just masticating and being a lazy schmuck?

I switch hands like a fucking American.

I have very good basic table manners, but my first wife had real upper crust country club manners. For example, she ate European style without switching between the knife and fork. Just little things that maybe most people wouldn't even notice like the elegant way she squeezed a lemon. After my mom had dinner with her for the first time she said to me, "I think that girl is out of your league."

I attended a "dinner manners" class at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet while in grade school. To this day I still get irked when I see someone use their outermost fork for their main dish. I don't get invited to many dinner parties.

By the way, I think the real question is, "In which hand do you hold your fork?" If you're right-handed, you pretty much have to cut with your right. So then it becomes a matter of dropping the knife and picking up the fork or keeping the knife in your right and eating with your left.

One piece at a time, fork = right hand, knife = left hand

My dad hammered me and my brother on table manners. He'd disown me if I ate continental style. Sometimes I cringe when I'm eating with people who weren't so brainwashed.

I cut it all up at once, including vegetables. I usually will mash some of the things together as well, like my own little food fusion. I'd think less of anyone who took notice of breaking their petite bourgeoisie norms.

Now I have to cut it up all at one time. I was extremely self conscious about it when I went out to dinner a couple of weeks ago.

What a silly question. Of course it's one at a time. Cutting all your food up immediately is what parents do for toddlers.

Depends on the dish. If I'm adding awkwardly shaped pieces of chicken to a bowl of pasta, I'll pre-cut. If it's--to stick with pasta--chicken parm on a plate, I'll slice as I go.

Cut one, maybe two pieces at a time, like JORR said. Also, switch hands to cut/eat. Finally, work your way from outside to inside with the forks. Basic table manners evade so many people.

The wife cuts up all her food before eating. Drives me crazy. I am done eating by time she is finished cutting.

I'm right handed and cut with my left, but I do it on purpose b/c I read somewhere that it keeps your mind sharp (pun).
