It was in another thread but ...
Why is Colbert still on the air? If someone said what he did about one of the Dems, they would at least be getting a couple days unpaid vacation time. He did it to the president. I mean President Trump may be an idiot and a moron at the least but come on, are there not supposed to be standards on broadcast television? Charles Rocket got canned for dropping the F bomb on a Sat night at 1am. You see people getting suspensions all the time for far less than this.

Oh who gives a shit anymore what kind of bad words are said on television. Why on earth would you be watching network TV anymore anyways? Unless its sports (and even that excuse is fast evaporating) there is no reason to waste your time with this crap. The only way these boring shows stay relevant is by creating weak ass controversy like this.

This is a great post. Nobody on TV ever said anything inappropriate about President Obama.

I just watched Colbert's jokes that made you whine like a little girl with a skinned knee. If you want him fired for that, you are absolutely a low-T, beta cuck.

Mr. "Grab them by the pussy" doesn't get disqualified from his job. But, a comedian calling Trump the pricktator, and not the POTUS, but the BLOAT-US is grounds for firing. And what does Charles Rocket dropping an F-bomb on SNL have to do with anything?

Chas, tell us again how you are a neutral observer, and not a Trump supporter in any way.

America has a point on this. I don't think there will be late night talk shows on every network for much longer. Seems like a waste of resources. If this is considered edgy then late night talk is pretty much done.

The free market has spoken and the market wants more of this (as he is the first CBS host to ever beat NBC's Tonight Show). If he was losing and did this, he would probably get reprimanded, but winning your time slot gives you more room to do this and I'd bet his ratings are up further after this.

That's why he is still on the air. I don't care for Colbert (or any of the late night shows other than Nightline), but more power to him if he's finding success.

Late night tv has been done since Jay Leno bore the fruits of his broom closet espionage.

But it's funny to see who's suddenly concerned about an Amendment other than the 2nd

Those shows will continue indefinitely. They take very few resources to produce and are very profitable for the networks. Why do you think even 2nd rate cable networks can afford to have them?

It still shocks me to see Conan on TBS. I like him, but I must admit to long thinking that his on that channel was a goofy idea.

Also, I know the FCC is just doing their mandate when they follow up on complaints.

1: nothing will come from this (which is what it should be)
2: can we maybe take this opportunity to get liberals in on the Libertarian view of things and just abolish the FCC?

If people don't want obscenities on air, then advertisers will not put their products next to those shows. Just look at Youtube. They only put ads next to what would be considered ad friendly content. It's a great free market solution for how TV (and all media) should be governed.

I will say that I do sample some of Conan there and have liked what I have seen. I know he loses in the ratings, but he still probably brings more profit that most of what TBS airs. Besides, his Trump to Obama calls are hilarious (and I suspect that really is Obama recording those since he has all the time in the world now).

I think Conan just likes being in a space where he can do what he wants and not have the network all over him. It worked when he hosted late night at 12:30-1:30 in the morning, and it works on cable. He just got a raw deal from the whole Tonight Show thing, and he's happy living out the rest of his career calling his own shots.

He got the raw deal, but I'd bet in the long run he's happier with his current situation than he ever could be under Lorne's thumb.

No, we need an FCC to regulate the actual nuts and bolts of broadcasting: for instance, telling WLW that they can't broadcast at 500,000 watts, or that you can't set up a station in Chicago at 96.5 when there's already a 96.3. (And if you've seen what's going on with the pseudo-translators popping up everywhere such that there's now a 97.5 in Chicago and in Rockford, they've even been derelict in that.) The FCC shouldn't regulate content like these bad words that make poopcup cry, but the public airwaves do have to be managed to some extent.

I'm fine with minimal licensing requirements just to ensure the airwaves are functional, but all other aspects of the FCC need to be vacated to the market.

Thanks to podcasting there have never been more choices for the consumer. I have to say I'm rarely listening to the radio, but my actual selection and sampling has also never been more diverse.

On that subject, we're waiting for your next podcast Dr. Ken

This is 2017, if you're complaining about the lack of selection on radio, that's your fault for not finding one of the thousands of podcasts available daily. I don't need to listen to 23 minutes of ads and updates to get 37 minutes of content

And the lion's share of blame for that is on who, the FCC or 'the market'? The FCC isn't making The Walking Dead run up damn near a 50-50 ad-content ratio. The FCC didn't mandate the creation of the "Chicago Baseball Schedule Update".
