Just curious. Coming up on 10 years myself. That seems about plenty. |

How long in one position or how long with one company? I can't stay in one position for much more than 2 years without needing something new. |

Depends on what you are trying to do. As an employer, I would be looking at longevity at previous jobs. Probably depends on your field as well. |

You've been there about 10 years and you don't own or run the company yet? #slowtrack |

6 years seems to be it for Tim Allen of Last Man Standing. ABC is the decider here and they decide he's had enuf of his job of being the second most popular show on their decrepit network. There really, really, really is an effort to shut up all non far left views on yer TV. "is it safe"--Clint Eastwood "can you help me"--them what was wronged "yes"--The Equalizer #propaganda |

i just left a job I was at for 11 years. A lot of thought and about 15 different factors played a role. there is no way to answer this question as it is unique to each job/individual. |

Being loyal to the same company never really gets you an advantage. Companies will just use you and offer ridiculously small raises (or none at all) until you've had it and leave. You will earn more by leaving and seeking employment elsewhere. Free agency pays. |

I'm coming up on 23 years later this summer. Have had a variety of roles in the organization, now I mostly mentor new employees and show up as the senior advisor on projects when we have a younger project manager in the role. I had only intended to stay 5-7 years and then start my own firm, but during that time I became uninsurable except on a corporate plan. I recently bought out another seven weeks off per year, so now I work 190 days/year. |

You will earn more by leaving and seeking employment elsewhere. Free agency pays. I definitely believe that to be the case these days. My wife worked for the same company for 25 years. She earned a good salary, good bonuses, and had great benefits. It was a hard job to leave. The thing is, she wasn't respected. The software that she currently works on is relatively new. She began working on it right at the beginning. There aren't many people in the world more expert at this product than she is. But her old job made her report to nitwits who didn't know shit. This is partially my wife's fault. She wasn't really ambitious, liked working 37 hour weeks, and wasn't super confident in her abilities. Finally, they hired a crazy broad that my wife just couldn't work under. My wife gave notice on the same day they fired this idiot in the midst of potential lawsuits. Her new job is great. She makes a little more money, but the respect she is given is the real important thing. If you're at a place too long they take you for granted. |

it depends on whether or not you love your job. i think having a job for 10+ years can be great. i've been at my job for 13 years but about 6 years ago, i decided that i needed to learn something new every year. because of that, its allowed me to strengthen my resume while also having a resume that lends to my loyalty. |

I enjoy the work I do, and I find it challenging. That said, I have switched companies twice in the same industry, each time for what would be considered a promotion. It keeps companies on their toes and lets them know that you'll leave in a second if something better comes along (and you should because they would do the same to you). Make yourself an asset and make sure your employer knows it. And never, ever, ever say "I'm just lucky to have a job." That's the beta-ist statement in the history of mankind. |

How long at one job is enough so that it doesn't look bad on a resume? Its been about a year for me but I've had a couple recruiters call within the last couple weeks. I'm not unhappy at the current place but if someone makes a great offer... who knows. My last job was 9 years, so I don't have a history of jumping. |

I have been at my current job for two years. For the most part, its a good gig. Last night, my boss at my former light bulb job (where I was at for a little less than 7 years) sent me a FB message saying he would "love to open communications up for a possible return." At the very end, I hated that job, but it was more $ than I make now so I said it would not hurt at all to talk and see whats up. Could be an interesting few weeks. |
