Anyone here know how they pitch to 2nd graders (8 yrs old) in the Oak Park Little League? I swear I've driven through after work and seen them using electric JUGS-type machines but I'm not sure. We're having a minor controversy here in Glen Ellyn. We're forced to use these manual machines with a spring-loaded arm that nobody seems to like.

Thanks. If anyone knows, what do other towns do?

They may use them for a bit in T ball. There is also a time when coaches pitch. Age nine the kids start pitching. I skipped all the T ball crap. Good for my sanity but likely not his baseball future.

Probably by using their arms.

My son is in first grade and they are using a pitching machine. It's like the football machine, not the one with a spring loaded arm. He's in Cal Ripken though, not Little League.

Lots of towns have the kid pitch until ball four. Then the coach (batter's team coach) comes in and pitches--I think the count goes 2-1 when the coach comes in to keep things moving along. Coach pitches from one knee.

Smails: How do you measure yourself with other golfers?
Ty: By height.

When I lived in Ottumwa Iowa and coached my daughter when she was 6-8 we used the machines. Bad move. They get used to the ball coming a certain way from the machine and cannot anticipate different pitches and angles from a live arm. Took my daughter time to adjust to live pitching. She is a freshman in HS now and hits .300 but always tells me that machine messed with her timing.
