So my grill episode got me thinking. I couldn't fathom hiring someone to assemble a grill for me. I had to hire an electrician a while back and was checking Angie's list. The number of people who hired someone to change a light fixture or replace a switch surprised me. I'm no Bob Villa, but I do most of the work on my house myself. The only thing I won't mess with is brick work. My neighbor seemingly hires someone to change light bulbs. How handy are you? (And, for the "other" thread starters, How Handsy are you?) |

I have very few skills in this regard. I have hung ceiling fans and lighting. We do all our own landscaping. I have put in screen doors. Everything else, even painting, we hire people who are better at it than me. I used to do a lot of work on cars. |

Almost none, lived in apartments the first 35 years of my life. If something had to be fixed we called the landlord. |

With YouTube, I've taken apart cars, refrigerators, washer dryer. I draw the line at furnace and anything running 220 current. I did pay to have a ugly brass chandelier changed out in the entry way. 20 foot ceiling in the middle of an entry way. Couldn't come up with a way to get up there with out a giant a frame ladder. |

I'm a fantastic painter, pretty good at refinishing wood floors, okay at drywalling, I do all my own landscaping. I suck at everything else. Oh, i built my own computer before. I don't care much for computer things these days though. |

Thanks to youtube and a couple handy friends I have gotten a lot better at doing things myself. My father was not a handy person and did not really teach me much about doing anything like that. I cannot afford to pay someone to do everything, so I have learned to fix some things along the way. I still struggle at times, but I usually get it accomplished. Recently I was able to fix our kitchen faucet when not too long ago I would have ended up calling a plumber. |

I'm okay to really good at doing nearly everything around the house. If you give me directions I can repair a lot of stuff on a car. About 15 years ago I couldn't do anything but change a tire and had never used or owned a power tool. Too many people trying to rip you off because of your ignorance or because of what they think you have. |

I'm bad. I just don't have the patience to do it. When things don't fit together like they should I get irrationally pissed. |

I'm not too handy but the three grills I've purchased all had free assembly and 1 even had free delivery. |

Try to do myself since I don't really interact socially with anyone in real life. I'm ok at it. Also very hard to find reliable people. Too many stories of contractors taking people's money and never being seen again. |

I like putting stuff together as long as the instructions weren't created by an intern or by someone who doesn't speak English. |

But they almost always are, and they rarely have accurate pictures either. A couple years ago I was given about 75 or so assembly manuals and told to find errors in them. We ended up finding 50-100 errors on average per manual. I couldn't believe it. I still think our manuals suck but they have gotten a lot better. |

sometimes its better to build it yourself without any manuals. most of the stuff I get is from the junkyard or sold by owner. I rarely buy manufactured things from a store but if I do, i don't follow most of the directions and just build it using common sense. |

Imagine the manuals for these companies that basically market themselves as low end/inexpensive. They don't give two fucks bout no instructions. |

That's how Fred Flinstone did it, but he forgot to account for a counterweight or some sort of retractable bracking for the ribs. |

Most of the guys I know who are phenomenal at this shit are borderline illiterate. That's not a knock... everyone's brain works differently, and I'm often envious that I just can't "see" how things fit together naturally. |

My son-in-law can't screw in a light bulb but currently attends the University of Chicago (NOT UIC) working on a Masters. I am all thumbs and get easily frustrated with any "build me" project. Screw it,I have no pride so I hire a "handy" man. |

There are a couple guys I know who can pretty much fix anything. One grew up on a farm and far,s but also worked for Case as a mechanic for years. He can find the problem and fix it if it's an engine. Another guy I know is just gifted at this crap. Although he breaks a lot of stuff so he kind of has to know it. Beyond that I think a lot of people just give up to early or don't want to take the time. My general problem is if I can't do it right/perfect it isn't worth it to me to do it. Occasional I've been forced to do things do to timing and surprised myself. As to the second question. I've been accused of being handsy. |
