Going to smokey mountains with the family for a week, staying Sunday thru Saturday. Looking for food recommendations and other shit to do while we are down there. I know we are hitting up Dollywood and doing some white water rafting but what else yall got?

Don't go.

The food there was trash, and so was the drinking spots.

Gatlinburg = Hillbilly Vegas

Bring your own hard liquor. There's only like 1 liquor store in the entire county and places like grocery stores only stock beer and wine.

Yea, my girls sister was just down there last year and this was a very important piece of information she had for me.

It's been a while but Fannie Farkle's sausage onions and peppers sandwich was quite tasty. Rent a scooter and drive into the mountains. Cade's Cove is very nice and a trip to Cherokee is scenic as well.

Loved the area as a pre teen. The natural attractions and if you got a cool cabin would be enough for me.

Yep, that's all I really need. Got a nice cabin with pool tables, golden tee, movie room etc. I'm a big fan of the mountains, drinking and smoking trees so it's enough for me. It's more so for the kids and shit.

The town itself isn't for everyone but (as noted by others) the surrounding area is beautiful.

Been there the last five or six years. Are you there with kids? I've only been there with kids, so this may be of no use to you. (If I remember correctly, you have a really young child?)

--Cade's Cove. Gotta do that. We saw some free-range black bears sauntering around last time. Really beautiful. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is pretty cool if you're hiking, but it's nothing like Cade's Cove. Still, you can find a stream in the park and splash around (which might be weird if you don't have kids). But definitely do Cade's Cove.
--Parrot Mountain if you like smart-ass parrots.
--The aquarium (Ripley's) is actually pretty cool.
--The Ober Gatlinburg is a skylift which affords excellent views but it turns into a tourist trap once they have you at the top of the mountain. There's a sky lift somewhere else, and it is supposed to be cool (it just takes you ten or fifteen minutes), but it looks terrifying.
--The Distilleries are popular, especially Sugarland.
--Kid stuff....too much of it.

Eats

--Mel's Diner. Excellent diner eats. Walls are packed with vintage signage that allows you to cover yourself when you get caught checking out cleavage.
--Local Goat Tavern. This may be in Pigeon Forge. Great burgers.
--Cherokee Grill has decent steaks, good ribs, and waitresses jiggly enough to make standing up and leaving something you'll need to psych yourself up (or down) for. Unfortunately, our server was male. (My Yelp review was removed for "inappropriate content.")
--Smoky Mountain Shakes And Dogs was pretty good. Looks dumpy, is dumpy, but they have chili dogs and southern fried hot dogs. The regular ones are good.
--There are many great breakfast places (like Crockett's Camp), but don't go to the Pancake Pantry. Here's my Yelp review: https://www.yelp.com/biz/pancake-pantry ... ce=(direct)
--Old Mill Restaurant. Meh. It was alright. Had to wait a while.
--Apple Valley Creamery. Bakery and ice cream, but good. Kind of far away from everything, though.
--My kids begged me to take them to IHOP. Mistake.
--Trust the Yelp reviews on Waffle Houses. Those tend to be hit or miss.

None of this is probably helpful since I was with my kids and they tended to dictate what we did.

Yes,I'm going with kids so this is a big help. We are doing the aquarium for sure, I love fish. I was up in the air about Old Mill but you may have made my decision for me. I don't plan on eating out too much so I wanted to make sure I made it worth it when we do. Definitely doing the waffle house as the kids or girl have never ate at one. An all you can eat buffet like Paul Bunyons in the Dells would be good for breakfast.

Appreciate the info, all good stuff.

I was at a "resort" on a lake in southern Indiana this weekend. Everyone had bad tattoos and facial hair. They all seemed to be wearing t shirts from Gatlinburg.

Yes. the scenery was great and I stayed in a great cabin up in the mountains.

The town itself was just generic and had nothing to offer. Plus the traffic anywhere you wanted to go was insane. It would take sometimes 30 minutes to get a mile or two in the area.

Gatlinburg is great.

Just the perfect place to bring kids.

We rarely ever get to do anything in Pigeon Forge next door, which used to be the prime attraction spot.

If you are in a cabin, don't fuck around leaving food out, or you may just get mauled by a black bear.

I love the shops selling all the useless doo-dads on the strip. Its basically like a mountain-version of Wisconsin Dells' downtown area, but a lot bigger.
