I'd be surprised if this has not been discussed in the past and maybe it is a personal thing that some won't want to discuss, but I noticed that on the news this morning they were looking for funds to help Houston. Now every couple of years it seems we have a big event and the call goes out to help and the need for funds is made very public. 9/11, Katrina, SuperStorm Sandy, and now Houston. Just curious if people here donate to the causes? Do you need to feel connected to the event to send money or do you send something to all of these disasters? I donated some money for 9/11 days after it happened to a local fire station. I can't even be sure my money got to a place that it could help, but I gave it to fire fighters so I figured it would make it. I've not donated to any other disaster relief causes. I just wanted to get a pulse on what others do in these situations |

I send no money because I don't trust any of the relief agencies to actually get it to where it needs to go. |

The only donations I make are to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. I make regular donations and people right here get help from GCFD. People right in our own community. Plus they have a very high rating. You know who's shitty with donations and has poor ratings? The damn red cross. |

My parents also have retired friends that used to work for the government and are called on by FEMA from time to time to do their thing. They are paid very well and all expenses taken care of on the government dime. I've always been a little skeptical how much of say $100 gets to the people that actually need it and how much gets stuck to the organizations fingers or anyone else along the way. |

Only money I've donated recently was to the Center for Mental Health in Scottsdale last year. |

You're better off buying Miller or Anheuser-Busch beers as they are canning fresh drinking water buy the pallet load and sending them down to Texas. https://www.today.com/food/budweiser-br ... ms-t115614 |

I remember this time, 12 years ago, when Katrina hit. I had just started a new job for a family business that was owned by Christians. I mentioned a relief effort to the owner, and he said point blank: "What part of 'get the fuck out of there' didn't they understand?" Real nice guy...... ![]() ![]() |

Quote: One of Houston's most famous athletes is doing what he can to help the city in recovering from the effects of Hurricane Harvey.
Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt announced his fundraising efforts to help victims of the hurricane surpassed $1.5 million Tuesday. In addition to the efforts, Watt donated $100,000 of his own money. Houston Rockets point guard Chris Paul donated $50,000 to the cause. "I think that it's been an unbelievable display of what can happen when people come together," Watt said, via Wilson. "Just to see how many people are sharing it, to see how many people are donating. Whether it's $5, whether it's $500, whatever it may be, to see so many people's support, to see so many people send the message, spread the message, it's incredible." Watt continued, praising the city-wide efforts as it deals with Harvey: "And I think that's what Houston's all about. It's a very diverse city. It's a very resilient city. It's been through things like this before—maybe not of this magnitude, but it's been through these types of situations." Watt has been sharing videos on his Twitter page providing updates on the fundraising efforts. He said the new goal is $1.5 million after reaching the $1 million mark: Watt and Paul aren't the only athletes to help with the hurricane relief. St. Louis Cardinals star Matt Carpenter said he will donate $10,000 for every home run he hits for the rest of the season and noted his teammate Adam Wainwright would match the donation for each long ball. What's more, the New England Patriots announced owner Robert Kraft and the team would match as much as $1 million in Red Cross donations. A number of other athletes and coaches have also taken to Twitter to offer their support for the relief efforts. As for Watt and the Texans, they were scheduled to host the Dallas Cowboys in a preseason game on Thursday, but Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the game would be moved to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. |

I can't wait to hear Bernstein sternly admonish listeners not to drive down there or even call to ask how they can help. "Just send the money," his cranky voice will sound. "Don't. Call. Them. Just send the money. That's how you can help." I'm glad the rubes have such a leader, and I can see why he gets so impatient with them. Curious Hair could say this much better than I could.... |

I usually give a couple hundred bucks to help when disasters like this hit. After a few days even the red cross usually sets up a donation site up so the money you give goes for that specific cause. |

If it makes you feel good/better then by all means go for it.... Tho i gotta admit I chuckle when during raw last night I see Seth Rollins in one of his new BURN IT DOWN!!!!!!!!! t-shirts asking me to help out with a few bucks for disaster relief.... C'est la vie, no?! Also, don't most people consider Chicago/chiraq a disaster overall? Where's the help for us? =] |

I'm going to follow the lead of noted moth JJ Watt and donate in the most public, self aggrandizing way available. And I'm sure that will keep me high on the mailing list of "suckers who occasionally donate" to a variety of causes. But someone please explain the logic of the Houston Texans playing another exhibition farce Thursday night? I couldn't imagine asking anyone on that team or any player from the area to play a stupid game with so much there only getting worse. |

More important than Jesus. More important that eating. And certainly more important than a natural disaster. |

I prefer to donate time or actual products (e.g., food, diapers, etc.) as it's too easy for money to be diverted from the intended recipients. Even when Lurie's Children's Hospital has people outside of Union Station begging for spare change, I have a hard time believing that money goes to "the kids." I picture it going toward buying pizzas for the nurses or something. Having said that, I wouldn't criticize people for giving money as it is a good gesture and probably makes them feel good. But practically speaking, it would be much easier if Jeff Bezos (who I believe is from Houston) just made a billion dollar donation instead of people giving the Red Cross $5 or $10 each. |
