My daughter has a friend her age (a boy) who has a toy kitchen with a kettle, food, utensils, etc. Would you be okay with that for your son? Maybe some of you do for your sons and I'm just a Neanderthal, but that would bother me a little. Sorry, it's just how I feel. |

Perhaps the kitchen set is just a pickup scheme to get girls? |

Would you be bothered if it was his sister's and he liked playing with it? |

I know a married couple who are both chefs. Their son has one of those kitchen sets. |

It's a kitchen set. He's not putting on a dress and playing with barbies. Don't see the issue |

No, it wouldn't bother me but I wouldn't buy it for my son. I would buy him this: https://www.toysrus.com/product?product ... gJdpPD_BwE |

Those can be educational for kids at many different levels of development. My sister got an EZ-Bake Oven for Christmas when she was 9 and I was 7. It made awesome little cakes. I asked for one the next year and the parents went ballistic. I wanted the sugary cakes, but I think my parents were afraid that someday I'd have a career which required me to wear a frilly apron and that I'd move in with Jean-Paul, a fashion designer from francophone sub-Saharan Africa who wore pink sashes. (I ended up not doing that.) When my son was about 8, he asked for one, too. Hypocritically, I told him that "those things burn down houses." He was fine with that, but then asked, "Can we just get a cake for Christmas, then?" |

If boys can't exhibit feminine behavior when they're kids and not be judged , when can they? |

We're assuming lyk is bothered by the kitchen as is, but maybe he's bothered because it didn't have as many kitchen tools as he would have liked. We already know the lack of a play steamer in lyk's childhood has had real world implications. If lyk wants today's play kitchens to have more tools then I say let him think that way. |

Fine. The libtards consider me to be primitive. Follow up: what if he serves "tea" to guests with a tea set? |

I do all the cooking in my house (my mom owns two restaurants, my MIL has two cooking settings: raw and burnt). My son played with the kitchen set we had. I had no problem with it. Then again, I have no problem with any of that gender specific stuff. He has two older sisters, he has been involved in their girl stuff. For example, they paint their nails so he wants his nails painted - but only boy colors. |

Okay, you've all convinced me the kitchen is fine. I'm still weary about a tea set. |

Boilermaker Rick wrote: Do you let your daughter do math and science and sports? She's two, but yes, of course. She has my genes, and I don't want to deprive the world of her genius. In all seriousness, I consider myself socially progressive, but I was raised in bumblefuck. There is an emotional Conservatism that will always exist. It's not like I'm actively hating people. I just have a mental framework of how gender roles work, and if I'm being honest, I want my girl to be a girl and I would want my boy to be a boy. |
