So I got a used car about 6 mo ago. Nothing fancy, just something to get me around instead of taking the bus.

So my car insurance company mails me my premium increased due to the odometer reading. Huh? I never gave them any update on the reading.

So I met the agent today and she says she got it from a 'third party vendor'. I'm like who is that? She said it was the car dealership I bought it from.

Sure enough, I guess when I brought the car in for 6 mo service, they reported the reading and sent it the insurance company. But can they do that without my consent? I never authorized anyone to send any car information to anybody.

There could be some clause in your state DOI contract that allows them to do that. I’m not familiar with Hawaii regulations, but I know stateside, any state that has an annual inspection requirement as part of the registration process, the odometer reading is usually sent in the file to the insurance company. The company I worked for didn’t use the info for rating, but that doesn’t mean others don’t.

Like Boyd said, maybe it's a HI thing. That said, read your policy top to bottom ... you might be surprised what you gave them consent for.

Having said that, I myself have never heard of odometer-rating a vehicle, but my specific knowledge is only in regards to one company, so there could be MANY things insurance companies do I've never heard tell of.

PA is an inspection state, I loathe it. They do Odometer readings and you also have to give one when renewing a registration. I have never seen any increase/decrease due to mileage but we do not have heavy commutes like other people might (I have a round trip 12 mile commute to work) so we do not put many miles on our cars.

Hmmm ... random thought ... I know we rate (in part, of course) based on mileage driven 'to work' ... <5, 5-10, >10, and business (e.g., a salesman or someone always out driving basically) ... and there's 'pleasure' which means not driven regularly to a job, more of an occasionally used car .... which we ignore and generally go with pleasure.

Anyway, maybe your company goes by a total of miles driven in a given time period (perhaps annually) - and maybe they had you at 'x' level when, according to your odometer reading(s) they calculated you should be at 'y' level which costs some more. Again, just a random thought.

A few months ago, I switched cars on my policy. They had usage as "pleasure" which was never the case. I switched it to "work" and there was no price change.

I had a bad experience with American Family a couple of years into driving and I've had State Farm ever since. My agents do work to keep my premium low. Over the last 10 years or so it has required a couple of calls, but the agent's office asks the right questions and make sure they get the right answers from me, which is great. About a year ago, it went down $90 per 6 months without me needing to do anything.

Gotta figure if you drive 30K miles per year, WHILE LIVING ON AN ISLAND, you must be doing the Uber thing or delivering poi door-to-door, and should be charged accordingly for your insurance, so it makes sense to me to rate accordingly, Getting the mileage from a third party, now that's pretty tricky to rock around...

Yes, I've been doing Uber in the daytime and it's putting the miles on the car. I know when I got insurance they said I would have to report mileage every 6 mo. Of course, if say I had drivien 5000 miles in 6 mo, I am definitely going to report something like 2500/3000. But those jerks beat me to the punch and got the more accurate reading from my last service a month ago. Really tricky. I'm sure there has to be some kind of consumer protection for this.

It wasn't 21, 25 or 30 though.
