OK, maybe a bit extreme, but wasn't sure what to call this. Coworker dealing with a situation today. One kid in her son's group of friends (call him Joey for now) has been suspended/in-school suspended 17 times in his 3 years at school for fighting, bullying (verbal and physical), and just being a general pain in the ass. Last week he got in a fight with one of the group, so they finally gave up and told him by group text to not to sit them at lunch anymore. The next day he still sits with them so they all get up and move to another table. He goes off and starts another fight. Today my coworker receives an email that all the kids that got up and moved were called into the principals office and given a lecture about how it was wrong for them to humiliate "Joey" by orchestrating a big scene and getting up and leaving him behind. My coworker also received a text from Joey's mom that she was upset about how he was treated and she's thinking about finding a different school. He's been suspended 17 damn times! |

If I were your coworker I'd have a meeting with the principal & counselor then (maybe) have a separate meeting with the principal, counselor, and parent of the other kid. Document what they have done to be patient and help Joey. Then describe how they feel Joey is a danger or has been disrupting her child's well being (negative school culture and climate). Ask them what their action plan is. If Joey does something to her child or makes life difficult for others will Joey face consequences? Ask what is expected of them and that just dealing with it is not an option. I'd also let them know that they will receive calls or visits everyday if it is not fixed or working to fix it. Also let them know that people above their heads can/will be notified. She basically has to become a bigger pain in the ass than Joey in a reasonable, documented, feel good kind of way. Also, yes try to help Joey, might need to be thru school, but they have every right to ask Joey to get help, stop fighting, or set limits especially if they are friends with him. |

If the kid with 17 fights has an IEP he is probably not going anywhere unless someone gets seriously hurt. Outside of bringing a weapon to school or a large amount of drugs, a kid is not going to get kicked out of public school in Illinois. They changed the law last year making it much more difficult to be removed. |

This does go to show the flaw in the idea that school shooters should be stopped based on "warning signs". What exactly can you do? If you expel you make it more likely he goes nuts and does it. I guess you could take away his gun privileges but the poorly planned 2nd amendment knocks that out. You can't put him in jail until he's no longer a threat. |
