I'm looking to buy a dog in the next month. I would prefer a puppy and I would prefer a lab. I don't know where to begin looking and I don't know what's a good price. I know many of you all are dog lovers so any help you can give will be appreciated.

If you want an AKC Lab puppy from a breeder be prepared to pay $$$. I wanted to get a Terrier pup (Westie or Scottie) and AKC pups were in the $1500 range. I got a 2-year old scrawny mutt from Paws for $60 and he has been a GREAT dog. Awesome with our kids. The only thing wrong with him is that he's a little cross-eyed and everyone has agreed that he has huge penis for a small dog.

Here is some advice if you want to adopt. LIE to them. Tell them what they want to hear. My wife and I were not eligible to get a puppy through different agencies since we didn't meet their criteria. Since we both work and don't have a fenced in yard, we couldn't get a puppy. Even though we both had had dogs for the last 14-15 years and got them as puppies, we have 2 kids, and my wife is a teacher- they still wouldn't give us a puppy. One place asked if they could come over and inspect our house. LOL

You might want to watch Craigslist to see if someone has to give up their dog. It really is nice to get a young dog that is already potty-trained. Our dog was 2 and house broken and it was very easy. Good luck.

I bought my French bulldog puppy from some Russian middle aged woman near Grayslake.

I got a shot book full of Cyrillic and the best dogger for 1300$.

The whole thing gave an Eastern Promises vibe. She told me that even though the shot record said 6 montha old, that was bc they lied to get her on the plane from St. Petersburg. She's definitely a puppy though.

Don't buy. Adopt. $100-200 typically covers the dog's adoption fee, the first round or two of shots, and the spay/neuter.

The cool thing for Nas being in a large metro area is there will be breed specific adoption groups out there, especially for common/popular breeds like labs. So you can get the best of both worlds, the breed you want, and rescuing a dog.

My wife and I have a pure bred basset hound and golden retriever by going this route.

This. Don’t support a puppy mill. Some adoption places cost a little more than this but still way cheaper than buying from some asshole like Boilermaker Rick. More humane, too. Rescue dogs have character.

I’ve had 8 second hand dogs and fostered 4 others over the years and it was interesting. Done a few from breeders too but those were for actual working dogs except the lab puppy my daughter had to have, after 5 years she’s a good dog. Not always easy to get a puppy from a rescue but there will be plenty of 12-18 month old ones available that people gave up on. puppies are assholes that instinctively want to destroy everything and need training and a lot of attention. People think they don’t and give up on them.

Puppies are more work than babies. Don’t do it.

You should check out Arlington Pet Expo next weekend. It's huge, there are tons of rescue and humane organizations there, so you check out a lot of them and ask questions/gather info face to face, which is going to be less annoying than emailing/phoning back and forth.

Other than that, Midwest Labrador Retriever Rescue (mlrr.org) is Chicago based, or you could browse Petfinder, which lets you filter by what you're looking for.

As has been mentioned, getting a puppy through a rescue can be difficult. There are a lot of things rescues look for when placing puppies, and with demand so high for puppies, it's not that hard to find applicants who check all the boxes. But like drunk squirrel said, if you go just a little bit older, there will be plenty of dogs available, and the fosters will be able to tell you everything you need to know about the dog you're interested in, so it's not like you go in blind, which some people are afraid of when adopting. Plus there's something to be said for getting a young dog without having to deal with a lot of the not so fun stuff of puppy-hood.

Whatever you decide, stay away from pet stores.

Adopt a dog rather than buying.

In October we adopted a dog from PAWS. All-in the dog cost us $400. Included in the price was a $100 deposit for a training class through PAWS. The dogs at PAWS already come spayed/neutered and with shots.

I never owned a dog before but the wife grew up with having a family dog. I underestimated the money and time the dog has consumed. Vet bills from the puppy eating dumb things (sticks, to stuffing) requiring x-rays and medication.

Cost of daycare is a bill I didn't think of either. $500 bucks flushed down the toilet every 3 months.

I agree with the recommendation but from what I’ve seen recently (we’re looking as well) the costs are typically $350+.

yeah but shelters don't let you adopt if they know you need a bait dog.

Adopted two from South Suburban Humane Society. The big dog we adopted about six years ago and cost $70, the smaller dogs (and puppies) are more -- we got a 2 month old from them for $150 about 3 years ago. They also charge you for the shots and the spay/neuter which is another $75.

While it is nice to have pictures with a puppy, in the future, I would get a nice 2-3 year old potty trained doggo because they are easier to deal with and love you just as much as a puppy does.

MANY are going to tell you to adopt, but if you want a puppy with heart guarantees, the health certification and all that, go to a breeder. Be sure to do your research on the breeder specifically and how to spot a puppy mill generally, because you don't want one of those dogs and don't want to support that model.

Adopt. Be the hero a dog needs.

The information here is really great. I appreciate it! Can you adopt puppies? My reasoning for wanting to get a puppy was to avoid needing to buy another dog in less than 10 years and it is a gift for a baby. I figured a 1 year old can "grow" with a puppy.

Any breeder can guarantee anything, it doesn't mean dick.. Let's say your 20 month old lab needs new hips( good luck telling the kids your opting for a new pup ) from the same sire and dam.

If you want to avoid a puppy mill you MUST see the parents on site, see how these hillbillies live.

I'd vote for adopting a puppy, you can even foster a lab pup or lab mix pup and see how it goes.

You can adopt puppies, but they tend to go quickly and are likely more prone to health problems, as they are more than likely the product of a puppy mill. It is possible to get lucky and find a solid breeder puppy at a shelter, but they are tough to get.

If the purpose of the puppy is to grow with your child, I suggest going to a breeder, still, that way you are more likely to get an even temperament than the shot in the dark that is adoption.

Dogs can be s crap shoot on age. I adopted a 9 month old mix that lived to be 15. A few years later my wife adopted a 4 and 7 year old from where she worked in s shelter. We figured the 7 year old was good for 3-4 years he lived to 16 too. Bought a pup from a respected breeder and had to put dog down at.

1+ year old dog will be better mix with kid than puppy imo.
