Crystal Mason, 43, was found guilty of tax fraud in 2011, and was free on probation when she cast her ballot.

She failed to convince the judge she did not know that as an ex-convict, she had lost her right to vote.

It is estimated that more than six million convicted US men and women were prohibited from voting in 2016.

In Texas, convicts can have their voting rights restored after they have completed their full sentence, including probation.

Illegally casting a ballot is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Mason's lawyer argued at Wednesday's hearing: "She was never told that she couldn't vote, and she voted in good faith."

Her defence team has already filed an appeal.

Mason previously served nearly three years in prison for filing inflated returns on behalf of tax clients.

During her voter fraud trial, she acknowledged having signed a document at the polling station that asks voters whether they have a felony conviction and if they have completed their sentence, including supervised release.

But she testified in court she did not notice that part because an election worker was helping her with the ballot.

Mason's probation officer also told the court he had not advised her she was ineligible to vote.

But Tarrant County District Judge Ruben Gonzalez was not swayed by the arguments.

After she was charged, Mason told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that she did not even want to vote, but her mother had insisted she do so.

"You think I would jeopardise my freedom? You honestly think I would ever want to leave my babies again?" she said.

Don't you think that if you've paid your debt to society that you should be allowed to vote again?

Unless you are a felon. A felon is a felon forever. You do not get to vote anymore. Also you do not get to buy a gun ever. So if you let them vote then they can have a gun.

Then people die.

If you pay your debt to society I don't think anyone should become a 2nd class citizen.

Well I did not make the rule so don’t get mad at me. Here is the deal though, you are a felon, you can’t vote, buy a gun or have a gun. I think most Americans support this common sense position.

I doubt most Americans support making people who paid their debt to society life long 2nd class citizens. I doubt that is a common sense position.

Don't you regularly ridicule a guy who has his name and address up on a publicly advertised website for the express purpose of the government and The People knowing who he is, what he's done and where he resides at all times? A guy who has to, by law, go and introduce himself to his neighbors as a scourge of society? And hasn't the message board you in-part run regularly doxxed this same person and pointed people to the same information noted above, while regularly pointing out his crime?

How much do you really support not making people "life long 2nd class citizens"?

Then they should probably change the felon rule. Just like they can change the gun rules.

I mean what the fuck is all the discussion and arguments about anyway?

Kirkwood and Bmac etc should just draw up a new law. Doesn’t matter I’m good.

Having to register as a sex offender or folks being able to do a background check and see that you are a convicted felon is far different from serving your time and not being able to vote or buy a gun for decades or life.

Have people that have to "register as a sex offender" served their time or not? Are they free people or aren't they? Do they get the opportunity to opt for a longer or otherwise different sentence without the registry contingent?

Again, how far are you willing to go to make sure people aren't treated for life as "second class citizens" because of crimes they have committed? Apparently this far. It's alright, just next time don't present your stance as though it is absolute, because it very clearly isn't.

You're arguing something entirely different. I'm not advocating for felons to no longer be known as felons after they pay their debt. I'm simply saying that they should not lose their rights as a citizen after paying their debt. MANY of these folks pay their taxes like you and I but they can't choose their representatives or legally own a gun. That's wrong.

.....yeah, and?

Can a sex offender vote? Can a sex offender own a gun? Shit, what kind of abridged Fourth rights does the offender have with the mandated public registry?

You're all for the rights of felons, certain kinds of felons, until you aren't. Just be clear and honest about your boundaries, don't try to hide behind your folksy use of "folks".

I am still getting shit for it. My status as an S.O has had a lot of Ex Po Facto attachments come up. All you have to do is look at the evolution of the list. At first it was not even for the public, just for the police. The the public with just the cross streets we lived, now full addresses. I am fighting with Florida right now because when I moved back to Illinois they where supposed to remove me from their data base as my time is done. I am not a life time registrant here in Illinois. You all keep spouting off shit about me yet you know next to zero about the laws and situation so may I suggest you either get informed or shut the fuck up.

If a sex offender has paid their debt to society they should be able to vote and legally be able to purchase a weapon. The same is true for every type of felon. They should still be recognized as a felon/sex offender. I'm not sure what about this you're struggling with. I never said Chas shouldn't be able to vote or own a gun or post here.

Her vote didn't even count. When you have to fill out a provisional ballot they have to verify if you're eligible to vote before they count your vote.
