This board, which we all love, has always been a haven for those who like to argue about pretty much anything. I can’t think of a time as long as I’ve posted here that Rick and I weren’t arguing about variance or JORR and Rick weren’t arguing about pro football or RPB and Nas weren’t arguing about Bernie. And it all seemed to be in good fun, even if it got occasionally heated.

So, I genuinely ask, what is different about the arguments that now infest the board? Maybe it’s just me, but one minute of reading that “Racism turned WWII” thread makes me want to light myself on fire. Anyone else agree? If not, I’ll shut up. If so, what are the differences that make it so unreadable?

And, yes, LTG, I am in fact acting as the message board police.

I don't think anything has really changed other than new voices are the ones doing the bickering about different things than used to be bandied about here.

The tone is different, and it isn't just ltg on that one. It's much more aggressive and serious.

Maybe leave them to argue but limit it to having to end when the cock crows thrice?

I think it's the fact that there is a small number of people who almost make the board unreadable almost every day. And if you disagree, you are a "snowflake" or whatever and it goes around in circles like that for 100+ posts in a day.

Yes Rick argues. Yes JOrr argues. Generally, they dont spill over into multiple thread every single day. Jorr has the ongoing W-L thing and BRick had the ongiong Cutler and JBills/Tebow thing, but again those are generally one thread. Yes, I reply to Keyser and give him shit. That is one or two (three at the most) replies in a single thread. And these things will come up, and sort of go away on their own.

When it is the same few posters-- who can't ever let anything go-- talking about the same few third rail subjects again and again and again and again..... It becomes very tiresome. And its very "paint with a broad brush." You're a racist if you don't like the NBA. You're a bleeding heart liberal if you don't like one political thing. Fuck you, man. There are MANY layers to people and their thoughts on one subject doesn't give you any sort of idea of who or what they are.

This really all turned when everyone felt they were just fine to spew anything anti Trump no matter how impolite. It has bled into everything.

Keeping the arguments confined to specific threads is a good point. That was usually understood to not infect other threads.

I think it's the tone of the country reflected here.

I don't know. The country was pretty crazy for the past 8 years too and things managed to remain civil for the most part.

People just need to CHUSE to have some fucking self-discipline. There's nothing at all mysterious about it. The usual suspects instead CHUSE to bloviate across a half-dozen threads at least, often about the same old shit. That's what's wrong. I don't give a flying shit about what the "tone of the country" may or may not be. It's a personal choice ... pure, plain, and simple.

There was a 60 minutes segment looking at voters in Grand Rapids. Frank Lutz headed the panel, and he said in all of his years of doing it people have never started shouting and fighting at each other until Trump.

He called it the Trump effect. https://www.mediaite.com/online/watch-f ... -exploded/

The gay mayor of South Bend is going to be a serious candidate to challenge Pence in 2020.

Sorry Leash, I was told that posters who now post less often aren't allowed to complain about personal attacks or the fact that a few people ruin this board for many others.

And I agree, the non-stop politics bullshit (on a sports board) doesn't help.

Vendettas were "allowed" to get extremely personal, and it makes it very hard to "hate respect" someone when they're calling you a racist/anti-Semite/bigot/Nazi than when they're incredulously asking you for the best pitchers with a sub-.500 W/L.

By "allowed" I mean a few things:

1. Cliques of posters cheered on these charges made against posters, with one particular asshole repeatedly trolling a poster with references to same, even.

2. Board administrators from time to time and at various times would/will engage in these extremely personal barbs. Kudos should be given to them for their mostly passive style of moderation overall, but cues are still taken from them by MANY.

Altogether, it is understandable for people to feel as though they are constantly on the defensive and feel compelled to defend their personal character instead of just their sports/media/political takes.

Just ban the usual shitheads and move on. If there's long-time people here who know how to play the board in the name of a good time, you know who they are. If there's people ruining the experience by being intolerant shitwagons, start banning motherfuckers.

Especially when it pertains to politics in the Trump era. People have no fucking chill whatsoever. In my mind if your forum can handle political discourse, fantastic. If there's a few members that simply can't handle their shit, start a political forum that these assholes don't have access to (it's easy as pie in phpbb3). If that's too much effort, ban political discussion and/or ban members who are blood-drunk on politicizing every fucking subject just to cause a ruckus.

Yep. I told LTG as much in private when we came to an accord. MANY can see how that ended up working out.
