Gotta love Jim O’Donnells synopsis

Much more troublesome for de Castro and his superiors at Entercom HQ is the fade to super-snooze of the droning WSCR-AM. The wheezing sports white noiser hobbled home #20 (2.3) with only a stout showing by morning men Mike Mulligan and Brian Hanley keeping it above area college radio stations.

The steady decline at “The Score” has continued despite the demotion of the funereal Dan “Boo Boo” Bernstein from afternoons to middays, the advent of Cubs spring training and the surreal rehiring of Jekyl-and-Please-Hide flatulence lighter Dan McNeil.

Said one longtime CBS Radio programmer: “‘The Score’ is going backward at an amazing clip and you know Jim de Castro isn’t taking the fall over that. Still, he’s got to answer to some pretty sharp sports people at Entercom now and it’s simply a question of where he elects to direct their arrows. If the Cubs flatten out this season and all of the inadequacies at the station are exposed, Entercom is not going to wait for any great tries at self correction.”

Primary bullseye will likely be overwhelmed ops superweight Mitch “Rotunda” Rosen. Beyond Mulligan, Hanley and overnight man Les Grobstein, “Rotunda” has no relevant starting lineup, a bench that battles over the words “shallow” and “feeble” as its password and insufficient contemporary instincts to pull the station out of its free fall.

Mully- Hanley get alot of credit for good ratings.. I think everybody who ever held that slot got good ratings. A morning commute is perfect for AM sports radio.. You could put almost anybody local in there and the ratings hold.

They're incredibly vanilla. But I have come to appreciate the show. They have a lot of guests and are hyper local.

I’m confident that Bernstein and Goff ( should they hire his dumbass back again ) would disprove this if given morning drive

Dan Bernstein killed the sports radio star. Terry was the balance to Bernstein. Without younger Terry, you get CNN of sports radio. Not a good mix if you are looking to attract Mid-Western listeners. Might have worked in California.

Agreed..it's pretty fast paced with few commercials. Mully is too long winded though.

Fake news!

Mully-Hanley are well produced. You actually feel like you are listening to a sports radio show and not a local college station.

I have enjoyed Parkins in the new timeslot. He atleast is trying to make the show entertaining. Liked how he tried to get MAC to talk basketball and Kevin? to talk hockey. Not his fault they paired him with a host that doesn't want to talk anything but football and sports gambling that has messed up vocal cords.

I like Parko, he's the best host at the station. North killed it, I think even Murph did well at that slot( murph blows).

You think anyone would listen to Bernstein in the morning?

Could you imagine Penn State talk at 6:30AM!

That time slot is basically just recapping the previous day sports news 75% of the time.

Mike North, Buffone & Van Lier, and Tom Shaer all struggled in that time slot.

Murph was the first score host to excel in the mornings, and Mully & Hanley have followed in his footsteps.

It was Murph and Fred though and as much as people may not like them, they often battled like real Cubs and Sox fans which made them appealing to me. Also, the late 90's and early 2000's were a wonderful time for Sox baseball, so it was funny to listen to Murph get shit.

Mully and Handley don't engage as much this way.

Exactly. O'Donnell's analysis raises serious questions about a format change should this ratings slump continue. A flawed Score is better than no Score at all.

I'm not sure what any of the above has to do with ratings. The fact of the matter is that several Score hosts have failed in the morning slot while Murph and Mully/Hanley have dominated the competition. Further, the "unengaging" Mully and Hanley have performed better in the ratings books than Murph and Fred.

Mully and Hanley finished 6th in the market with a 3.8. I don't know what B&G did, but you gotta believe it was rather low. Can someone ask Feder?

I'm saying that they were successful due to a combination of their shtick and the timing. Mully and Handley succeed because people wanted a lot of Bears talk up until the Tressman years.

Does WSCR typically finish behind NPR in the ratings? That's amusing.

As usual O'Donnell's analysis discusses the ratings for ages 6+. That is not the target market of The Score (or WMVP). It's almost meaningless without that context. He knows that but it wouldn't suit his narrative.

Feder likely won't break it down by target demo (he hasn't for quite some time) and Larz is long gone so perhaps Mac will chime in.

His language is quite odd and mildly amusing. In the absence of more robust data, we'll have to go with that.
