So apparently this is easy for alot of you. My Dad wasn't a drinker but would do a shot before bed to help him sleep. Others in my family can sleep sober easily.

Back when I was doing physical labor as a teen I could fall asleep sober no problem but I don't get how some of you office guys fall asleep sober no problem.

How do you turn off your brain?

Depends on your job: is it high-stress or involve a lot of brain power? Try working out before going to work; when you get home, you'll be exhausted. If that doesn't work, go see a doctor for some sleep aids.

A night cap will help you fall asleep, but alcohol prevents you from REMing. Your brain keeps track of how much REM sleep you've been lacking, so if its the first time in a long time that you've gone to bed without drinking your brain will try to make up the deficit and you'll have some crazy vivid dreams. This is also why late stage alcoholics see pink elephants, their brains eventually just say "fuck it" and try to dream while they're awake.

When I’m not laughing at the thought of Peeps trying to murder me, I have begun meditating. You should try it, Gay. There are apps you can download that will lead you in guided meditation. Headspace is the one I use. Like you, my brain seems to always be in overdrive and won’t ever turn off, but meditation has been a great tool to help.

Try looking into biofeedback. It's quite amazing. It's almost like self hypnosis but its quite real.
