He had one legal strategy, to piss off the trial judge iirc. That never works out well. But if Patti really wanted him home she would have been less severe in public.

a brother of a friend took her to prom. I guess she was a real ugly duckling back then and her father had to ask his father to get him to do it. I guess she had no social skills either. She cleaned up pretty well for herself but you know that person is lurking inside somewhere with low self esteem

My guess is that Blago looks at himself in the mirror Patrick Bateman style whenever they did it and that he was her only experience.
