Quote: Carjackings can lead to lengthy prison time for adults. Those convicted of carrying out the crime with a weapon face six to 30 years in prison, four to 15 years if unarmed. By contrast, many minors convicted of carjacking face probation or, for those with longer criminal histories, a few months in a state prison for juveniles. And beginning in 2016, a new state law pushed by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle disqualified minors 15 through 17 years old from being automatically transferred to adult court if charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking or armed robbery with a firearm. Great work dipshit. |

We ebb and flow between getting tough on crime and then pulling back. We are seeing things like bail reform and alternative discipline systems in schools. The trend is definitely towards getting softer on crime. |

See the quote in the article? Quote: “I like driving around. I like going fast,” said the teen, speaking on condition of anonymity because he’s out on bail for a separate arrest in connection with auto theft. “I feel good being with my hands behind the wheel because I know how to drive, and I drive good.” It sounds like he thinks he's just playing a video game. It's no big deal. It's fun. |

the fact they actually respect anonymity for someone who brags about committing a serious and dangerous violent crime says all you need to know about American media |

Heck, I was rooting for him all the way through his statement until the end when he said 'good' instead of 'well' ... at that point, I felt is was only appropriate to give him the chair. |

So is the fact that 60% of the carjackings are by juveniles a reflection of the video game culture and teens wanting to "drive fast," or due to changes in the law where adult criminals are now having kids do their dirty work so the punishment is lighter? |

Great work dipshit. The criminal justice system is so biased, though! biased toward who ? It's actually biased towards (meaning in favor of) criminal defendants, and for good reason. But a lot of people scream from the rooftops that the system is rigged against racial minorities. I think this state law in question was designed specifically to benefit—by way of less severe punishments—racial minorities, and is not at all aimed at reducing crime or effectively prosecuting those accused of a crime as significant as "aggravated vehicular hijacking or armed robbery with a firearm". |

When the state has a law designed specifically to ensure that 15-17 year olds won't go to adult court for committing a carjacking with a firearm, I'd say it is the latter. |

It's kind of weird that a slight drop in shootings (compared to 2016) coincided with a rise in car jackings and crime downtown in 2017. It's like they turned their attention toward other things. I've noticed shootings have been going up again and car jackings slightly down versus 2017. I don't get it but I expect to crime to continue to rise over the next few years. Just my professional opinion. |
