July 4th falls on Wednesday next week. This screws MANY things up. I know in my industry it will pretty much be a throwaway week.

So, regardless of dates and tradition, do you think that Holidays (except Thanksgiving) should always be part of a long weekend and observed on a Friday or Monday?

Throwaway weeks are great.

You do realize, mathematically, this would be impossible?

No.

I don't get defined days off but for those that do, a mid week day off sets up perfectly to make a very long weekend. This creates a ghost town situation for me downtown where I can walk into government offices and not wait in lines, I can leave the house late in the morning without traffic and it is a low intensity week.

Yes, I would prefer to have a three day weekend but honestly, I prefer the holiday being mid week than on a Monday. Monday holidays mean sleep deprivation and people in shitty moods Tuesday-Friday.

we get Bonus vacation days. they set a schedule at the beginning of the year. We do business typically in the k12 space. this year we can take next thursday and friday at a half day cost.

so needless to say, i enjoy the Wednesday holiday.

btw, the last 2 weeks of december we get off completely at the cost of 4 vacation days.

So do your productive weeks include 100 posts a week too?

Does make for a strange week, especially when you add in that it's prime vacation season for people with school age kids. We have a small office (15 people), and 5 are out all/majority of next week.

I work the day after thanksgiving every year. Phone doesn't ring and no emails come in.... My company "packages" day after thanksgiving, christmas eve, new years eve, and I can take 2 of the 3 as paid off days. I always take the eve's because it allows for a long christmas vacation without using too many actual vacation days.

Yeah the day after Thanksgiving is a Penske day for sure, there are a few things going on that make it worthwhile to be open for 1/2-2/3 of the day.

One time in honors chem my lab partner told me it would really be crazy if one year Halloween fell on Friday the 13th.

Honors students say stupid shit all the time. My niece is AP everything smart and has worse common sense than IMU.

Honors and AP today is not like it was when I was in high school. They hand that stuff out like candy now and the grade inflation is ridiculous. SICP pushed back against the tide but even gave into it a little last year with redefining its grade system. You read the demographics of the admitted classes for these colleges and you would think everyone was a genius if you didn't understand the current grading scale in most high schools. The colleges have a profile for each school so they know where there are frauds.

I swear there are good high school districts that appreciate the kids who simply show up and don't demolish the school to the point they are on an honors track, which automatically adds some unreasonably large weight to a students GPA.

Of course.

It was an absurd idea by the OP, so I responded absurdly. I voted "no" FWIW.

Responding with ""Independence Day" should always be on a Thursday or Friday", would have appeared too supportive of the Op.

Mandate Wednesday holidays include Thursday and Friday too. Do the same for Mondays before Tuesday holidays and Fridays after Thursday holidays.

There should be a week off mandated somewhere. We work far too much.

Yeah...the whole week of 7/1-7/6 is a Penske week. Hard to plan on accomplishing anything.

it's going to cost me 2 vacation days for the 3rd and 5th. I have no issue working on 7/2 or 7/6

Post subject:  Re: Should Holidays always be observed on a Friday/Monday?

Our corporate company is moving to four, ten hour days per work week. The OBAC (Office Building Ass Clown) posse at our plant is following suit. Pretty much the most important issue to solve for them is what to do with Friday holidays?, since they are all now scheduled off. The riffraff were polled and decided to eliminate Good Friday as a holiday all together and split the eight hours over the five Monday-Thursday holidays so they all get ten hours of holiday pay on those days. Because, Lord knows, none of them believe in Jeebus anyways, and none of them could damn sure survive on only 38 hours of pay for a week during which they accomplished about 14 hours of non-Penske work.

This does not effect me, who gets only eight hours of pay for a holiday despite working a rotating day/night shift of 12 hours. It does, however, eliminate my biggest golden hour day when Good Friday occurs during a refueling outage. During outages we work four on/one off, so if your numbers fall right, your fourth day of the week is Good Friday, and you get paid 30 hours of pay for working a 12 hour shift.
