Never fully understood the Drake Equation when my Astrobiology professor explained it to us in college because the probability of how life arose here and the sequence of events leading to Homo sapiens is incalculable. Maybe our Space Force can figure this shit out.

High degree of confidence that we are not the only communicative species in the galaxy [maybe the cluster], much less the universe. The probability that we encounter another of these species is practically zero, though.

We're just now seeing light from stars in our galaxy that was emitted nearly 100K years ago. The most distant star we've observed is 9 billion light years away. Sentient life can evolve in 100K years, and with the upper observable limit being 9 billion years, it's inconveivable that we don't share this universe with someone else, we just can't see it.

And don't get me started on whether any interstellar species we do encounter will be peaceful (they will be).

I think it’s more inconceivable that there are people on this world that think they know everything. So much out there to stretch the knowledge of our most intelligent.

Scientists are very conservative by nature, the Scientific Method even dictates that they search to disprove their hypothesis, for the love of God.

So I'm hopeful that stuff like this is more the result of them being cautious about their predictions to a fault, and not they they are absolutely confident that they know absolutely all that they speculate on.

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t just land and say “hello.” That’s what we would do if we found life on Mars. The secrecy angle makes no sense to me.

I think it’s been brought up before but if you haven’t yet, watch the “ unacknowledged” documentary . Lots of food for thought . Put me firmly in the there’s no fucking way we are alone camp too.

I'd say that any species advanced enough to travel and observe us has their own version of the Prime Directive. A civilization with the raw power to warp space and time for travel wouldn't want to interact with one that can't even fathom their technology, I would think.

I’ll watch “Unaknowledged”— sounds interesting. But humans can’t even observe a clam without messing with it, so I’ll be interested in how other species watch us without interacting. Unless they do interact, and alien abductions are real.

If we have no contact with them and have no hope for contact with them then the question of their existence is irrelevant

I would say that we are not alone, but I would also say that most so-called "sightings" are just people seeing something natural or man made in the night sky that they do not understand.

It may simply be impossible for faster than light travel to actually be accomplished. I believe some MIT physicists calculated that to reach FTL speeds would require a power generation sources that is more than 10x greater than our own sun's total output. If that is true, then while we may not be alone, other intelligent lifeforms will certainly not reach us nor will we ever reach them.

Right, cus if we can't do it, nothing else can.

I just don't see how you can generate 10x the power of a star.

Besides, there is the interesting idea that each civilization does eventually reach the point at which it can destroy itself. Many theorize that few civilizations survive this stage in their development. We as a species entered this era in 1945. Whether we survive it remains to be seen.
